I took a little of what I liked from several welding table designs. I have some square tubing welding under the table. I have made a mount for my vise and 3-axis that is mounted to square tubing that can slide into the tubing mounted to the table, so I can mount up the vise or 3-axis, as needed. What I want to improve is the "play" that exists between the two pieces of square tubing. Standing and facing the mounts and twisting to the left and right there is a noticeable movement. When trying to cut tubing with a Sawzall, the vise needs to be more rigid. So of the problem may be the fact that the hole for the retention pin is larger than the pin. I wonder if re-drilling to get a tighter fit of that pin to the hole may solve this? I want to modify what I have. I have seen the pic of the mount where a piece of like 4 inch channel iron was used. in a vertical mount on the edge of the table. But, my mount still would have the connection underneath the table and the movement would still need to be solved. I thought about a smaller pin, or a decreased hole( in both pieces of square tubing) to pin tolerance...? Wanted to sample the thoughts and experiences of others.Pics: Thanks for the time and help.
Reply:Nice table. You could drill a 5/8" hole on 2 adjacent sides and weld a 1/2" nut to the outside of the receiver tube then use 1/2" bolts to hold tension on the tool like a couple of set screws. Weld a small piece of round stock to the bolt heads so you can tighten them by hand. Here's that set up on a roller stand I built for fabbing spiral stairs on. It easily holds 400-500 lb stairs with out slipping. For what you want I'd put the bolts on adjacent sides, instead of the same side, so they're 90* apart.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:Thanks Brian. I was just stuck and trying to over-think it, I guess. I appreciate the pics and help. I have something similar for extending my table. I just did not think of it. I will post a pic. But, your idea and pics are perfect.Thank you and have a good evening. |
