I want to build a brush hog mower to pull behind an ATV does anyone know where I might find plans for this project or at least some decent pictures to get me started?
Reply:I have a brush hog as others do. Think twice about it. Brush hogs are very dangers machines; the two blades are about 20 + lbs each and put a tremendous force on the blade disk at 2,500 rpm, take into account what may be launched by blade strikes.  What about restoring an older one?
Reply:Tractor Supply usually has them in stock, I'm sure there is one around you. Take your camera and tape measure. If you cannot convince them, confuse them.         Harry S Truman
Reply:yeah , i was considering the one at tractor supply like in the first picture....but they're close to $2000.......i'm now considering playing with making a towbar and a gang of cheap or used mowers... Reply:If you're just looking to mow, find a used deck off a rider.  Mount engine wheels and tongue to it and you're good to go.  Shouldn't be too hard to find, I scrapped about a dozen of them awhile back.My name's not Jim....
Reply:That's positively weirdJust put the beer back in the cooler, fire up the mower, and dedicate some time to anhilating some grassThink of the exercise gained pushing the mower.  Good for your heart, and builds strong legs  (You're wife will be chasing you in circles around the bedroom)  She'll nickname you ArnoldYou got a grand in baby mowers, plus the steel to make up the gang, which will probably not work correctly, or the mowers will puke................By the time all's said, the finish mower will seem cheap"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:And here I'm contemplating getting an actual push mower (you know...the kind with no engine).  It's what I grew up using and I figure that the exercise won't hurt and it'll save me on gas money.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:i stole the pictures off ebay after seeing OP..............i consider'd it for a bout a minute after i posted , then snapped out of it.can u beleive some guys selling plans for this on ebay. think i searched "tow mower"        thermal arc 252i  -  millermatic 350P -   miller XMT, cp300ts, 30a 22a feeders, buttload of other millers, handfull of lincolns, couple of esabs  -   Hypertherm 1250 G3

Reply:How about one like this. This is what is called a horse drawn brush cutter. Guess you could pull it with a four wheeler, If you had a big enough one. Attached ImagesTrailblazer 302Hobart Stickmate AC/DCLincoln SP 135 TSmith torchSpoolmatic 30A

Reply:Originally Posted by transitYou will need a minimum of 5 Hp at the PTO per foot of width of cut [not engine Hp]. 3 ft = 15 PTO Hp, 4 ft = 20 PTO Hp, 5 = 25 PTO Hp. Anything less and you’ll get bogged down.

Reply:Thanks for the help and good advise what I'm looking to build is of the type for cutting grass brush and small trees. They want $3000 for one and I'm sure I could make one for less than $1000. I don't have or want a tractor so it would have it's own motor 18 hp or so, and be pulled behind an ATV.
Reply:A new engine will cost ya $1000 or better....My name's not Jim....
Reply:If your ATV has a PTO, that will power the hog, but you will need 5 hp/foot, PTO or engine driven. Brush Hogs are very different than a finish mower, the two 20 lb. blades are mounted on a disk and pivot “Chopping” there way through anything heaver than light brush. Take a look at the underside of a hog. See page 32, items 13 and 15. Pay attention to pages 6 and 20. It is very common for the operator to be run over, 1 in 500 survive. http://www.kingkutter.com/downloads/manRKRK.pdf
Reply:these people are right, the hog's take a lot of HP, 18 HP will get ya a 36" cut BH. My ford  8N won't run my 60" worth a crap...........signed : farmer John............

Reply:pmill607,Northern Tool has a basic brush mower that is designed for ATV use, it's usually on sale for approx 1,400 bucks. However it is light duty and can destroy itself in heavy brush, it also requires some tinkering and tweaking .....such as additional engine protection to guard it from brush getting into wiring harnesses , fuel lines, etc etc. also the towing setup is Mickey Mouse....but hey you get what you pay for.Even the so called heavier more expensive models still require additional guards and a better towing setup.....all you get for the extra dollars is a slightly bigger engine.I recently designed and built my own brush hog for ATV use, it's lean, mean and will devour anything that it will climb onto and over.....the only thing that comes out the back end is saw dust and wood chips......even 3" and 4" trees are mulched within mere seconds. Now you're probably wondering what in tarnation powers this thing and how much did it cost.....surprisingly it is powered by a piddly 12.5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine that I removed from a used riding mower that I picked up for 100 dollars, you can also use a lot of other items from the riding mower such as an electric mag clutch if you're lucky enough to get a mower that has one. If not you can use the old tried and true tensioning idler method to engage the belt drive......basic & simple. The entire unit probably cost me less than 500 dollars to build and is virtually indestructible.....it's all in the planning and scrounging for material......there's always a buddy around some corner that seems to have some necessary components laying around in the back corner of his garage.Having access to a machine shop also helps keep costs down. The main shaft that I used to drive the cutting head is 1.5" dia superior shafting with a 20" dia / 3/4" thick flywheel.....massive and heavy ...yes...but once the engine spools this thing up to 2200 rpm......nothing stops it.For blades I designed my own high lift mulchers made from grader blades.....tough ...oh yeah.To prevent possible blade fragments from coming through the sides of the cutting deck.....well it's 3/8" thick.....should stop a bullet. My unit weighs in at a whopping 825 pounds, but this has little concern for me since I pull it with a 2009 Polaris 6X6 800efi that has enough chug and grunt to pull it with ease.If you're interested I can help you design a unit.
