I'm building a small trailer to tow behind the Kubota. It will have a 125 gallon water tank on it. I currently have no well at the cabin, so I need a way to haul water from my brother's place to mine. I figure in the future when I do have my well in, it will be handy to haul water to other parts of my 6.23 acres when I need it. I have a bunch of scrap metal on hand, so I'm going to see how cheaply I can do this build. The frame is built out of some 3 inch c-channel I had. I had to purchase the d-rings, and the suspension set, so far I'm just over $100 in. Pics so far...I know the welding's not the purdiest, but I'm trying... Reply:Looks good to me so far. It could double as a really big pesticide tank after you get your wellAHP 200xMiller Trailblazer 251 NTMiller Legend AEAD-200-LEEastwood MIG-175Eastwood 40A Plasma CutterDillon Mk 5 OA setup

Reply:looks good so far, i think a 125 gallon tank should be perfect considering the average showers 30 gallons, not over kill, but your not making 2-3 trips every day either."...My pappy was a pistol I'm a son of a gun...""...God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy..."

Reply:the frame looks great but the shackles and springs seem light. That full tank of water will weigh 1000 pounds so double check your axle ratings. Also, I dont know what your 4 wheeler is rated at but this would certainly be in its very upper limits if not exceeding them.UA Local 598

Reply:Well, it finally stopped snowing after two days, and the sun is out! Time to move the project outside for a while so I can test fit the tank. I wanted to see if I have enough room around the perimeter of the trailer to build some 6 inch high rails. Looks like I do. Also, I finally got to try out the new bucket hooks I welded on a few weeks back! Attached ImagesMillermatic 175Black and Decker hacksaw
Reply:Just curious what you think, probably don't really need springs on a slowly towed water trailer?

Reply:Ha!  I saw the picture out in your yard and said to myself, "That sure looks like Utah" then I saw you were from West Jordan.  Good Stuff. Reply:nice work are you going to put a jack on side of rail near front so you can get un hooked when loaded?

Reply:thank's for reply.
Reply:Are you planning on a few more cross members. It looks like the center member is the only support for the tank.
Reply:just got home from buiding those damn booms for that...is it a 203 or 243 loader?...god i hate building those...small but a pain in the *** to tack...robots love to eat them up if that top connecting plate isnt straight...hope you like it...i worked my *** off to build it!

Reply:Originally Posted by Ed.In my opinion that trailer is never going to break because of the weight so long as your welds are good. Using 3" C channel for that project is very much overkill, but hey, if it's scrap then why not, keep the cost down, 125 US gallons is about 1042lbs, to put that in perspective it's about the weight of 6 adults in it (3 per side) plus the weight of the tank. I would use springs as it will make the ride better and smooth out the bumps when travelling. You could increase the spring rating and tyres and in my opinion would be able to carry at least 3-4 times what your intending to carry on that frame. The drawbar isn't a problem if it is 3mm thick or thicker, as it is reinforced by the 2 sides. Personally if I was building it using 3" C channel I would not have even used the "top C layer" and made it all one layer and also just extended the sides arms so that they reached further up  closer to the trailer hitch. But each to their own method of doing things, excellent job anyway.
Reply:lol...that was a good one...they are a pain but they do a really good job of doing what the average guy wants to do without having to shell out massive amounts of cash for a medium loader to do the job...
Reply:I hope the springs work out.Springs, combined with a fairly heavy high center of gravity load, no shocks, and rough ground, can lead to a fairly interesting pogo stick effect.  Boing boing boingFor most off road stuff, the pneumatic tire provides enough cushion, and even it can get out of hand once in a while.Keep it slow until you discover the handling characteristics.  And fill the tank FULL, the ag tanks have no baffles.I have a small 200 or 300 gal wheel mounted sprayer, and it gets interesting when the tank starts to run down.  I think if it were on springs, it'd start dancing across the pasture."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Good to see you around. I haven't worked on my rock crawler for some time, so it's nice to keep in the fabrication loop with tractor stuff.Millermatic 175Black and Decker hacksaw
Reply:Finally got a little time to work on the trailer today. I focused my time on preparing the axle for paint. The axle sat on a farm for the last 40 or so years waiting to be built into a trailer, but the owner lost interest, so he said I could have it. The first pic is the monstrosity that was welded to it that I cut off to get to the good part. Second pic shows that the axle is 1.75 inch solid steel. Way hefty. I sleeved it to the correct length with 2X2X.120. It slid right in with just a touch of grinding.Edit: I should add- The solid steel axle was the straw that finally broke the camel's back and made me decide to buy a horizontal bandsaw. Cutting it with the chop saw SUCKED! I made the first cut, then waited for the weekend and took the remaining axle to a buddy's house to cut it on his band saw. Way better! Must have. Reply:since the hubs sat so long i would take them apart and re-grease the bearings if you didnt already do so.I break things for a living...
Reply:When cutting relatively large stock with a chop saw.............Either put a piece of stock between it and the fence (to move the part you're cutting away from the center of the blade cut) (stock cut absolute center on is a PITA.  Too much surface for blade)Or be patient.  The saw will cut it, but slowly.  Try not to lean on the blade, all that does is glaze the cutoff wheel.  It will eventually cut the material"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Or buy a good O/A setup.Cheaper than a bandsaw, and much more versatile"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
