I found this on cl. 240 dollars. Its a 2ft by 3 ft piece of 1/2 inch stainless. Was used for table top for a drill / tapping machine. It has a few holes for mounting that, plus one on each corner for securing it to a frame. It has a spiral pattern on the top. Is that a milling type artifact? is this a blanchard ground top? I got it to add to my welding table for stainless and aluminum work. It seemed to be a great deal since stainless is so expensive. Any thoughts? thanks Attached ImagesMiller diversion 165Miller mig 211Hypertherm pm 30Milwaukee 6230 14 inch chop sawMd 45 mag drill (RIP; fell on its head)New MD 45! Reply:Sounds like a deal. Do you know what grade stainless it is? Metalsdepot has a 2' x 2' - 1/2" piece of 304 listed for $439.88 HEREIt looks like it was ground (blanchard???) flat too. Have you put a level or straight edge on it to check flatness?Seems like you scored on that one.How do you know the blacksmith's dog? When you hollar at him he makes a bolt for the door!

Reply:Good call brucer! It attracts a magnet and has some rust on the back. My bad to not be a better cl shopper. I'm too trusting. My bad, still a nice ground top, but doesn't appear to be ss as billed.Miller diversion 165Miller mig 211Hypertherm pm 30Milwaukee 6230 14 inch chop sawMd 45 mag drill (RIP; fell on its head)New MD 45! Reply:There are such things as ferrous stainless steel. A good example is 410.

Reply:Magnetism is not a totally reliable means to determine if a metal is stainless steel or not. Some SS is magnetic, most is not. The appearance of rust on the backside isn't a reliable indicator either, as ferrous grinding dust could have settled on the piece and rusted. But stainless wouldn't be a good choice for a welding table because of the spatter issue. SS conducts heat more slowly than steel or cast iron, which means spatter will stick to it a whole lot more, and be much harder to clean off.
Reply:200/300 series stainless is austeitic and non magnetic. 400/500 series is martensitic and is magnetic. A spark test would probably tell you what it is. I don't remember the spark patterns off the top of my head so you'd have to look it up.

Reply:I'm in Milwaukee. My speedy metals guy says 140 dollars for 1/2 inch 2 ft by 3 ft plate Blanchard ground. My cl seller is a legit dude. He apologized and said he thought it was ss since it looked so shiny, he agreed to refund 100 dollars. So I'd say that makes me very lucky!Miller diversion 165Miller mig 211Hypertherm pm 30Milwaukee 6230 14 inch chop sawMd 45 mag drill (RIP; fell on its head)New MD 45!
