Quick question. I have a job where I am welding a bunch of small cast iron pieces to cast steel. just decorative parts for a customer, I planned on tig welding them as I would if it were a all cast iron job.  I have about 100 or so to do and would like to see if I cant speed up the process a bit. The welds will be very small stitch's, about 2 per piece.  Also I need to be able to paint these or  powder coat depending on what they decise to do. So brazing is out.  Any suggestions ?Dan.Repair Specialties LLC
Reply:Use a cast iron butter rod, like a AL7 or UTP 85FN. Treat it as if both were cast iron and peen a few whacks after to relieve the stress in the iron. I use this way a lot to put on cast iron finials and other cast iron pieces. The UTP is my personal favorite as it makes a nice looking weld and you move pretty fast. Hope this helps.Last edited by Bob; 09-29-2008 at 12:21 AM.

Reply:Without knowing how they attach glue/epoxy might work.  Screws or rivets will work.  Glue/epoxy after powder coating.Depending on how they attach then I would suggest using the appropriate filler for cast material.  I use regular mig wire on cast collars that slip over tubing.  I glue many caps and finnials.  Otherwise, I use nickel rods for panels and parts that might just fall off. What is the issue with brazing and powder coating?  Only issue I had was complete flux removal when working with tubing.  I am not suggesting brazing, however.Last edited by tapwelder; 10-01-2008 at 11:06 PM.
Reply:Allstate 4-60 nickel rod in 3/32" size would work great for the project.  Arc weld.

Reply:Regarding the painting; you would treat this with an ammonia based prep agaent likely from an autobody suppliy house your local welding shop I doubt would have it, and a zinc/chromate epoxy or polyurethane over everything for adhesion.
