Hello all,I have a belt grinder that I have been using to make knives for years. Unfortunately for a few years it has not seen much action and started to rust. In addition to that the stand tended to rock a bit when I put pressure on the belt when grinding and it irritated the heck out of me.  I decided it was time to put this grinder on the front burner and do something to revive it.The first photo shows what the grinder and stand looked like when I first put it all together.Second photo shows the new stand. 1" plate top and bottom and 6" tube with 1/4" wall.Third photo shows the grinder disassembled, sanded and ready for paint.Fourth photo shows the entire thing assembled.Fifth photo shows another angle when assembled. Reply:Here is the next part of the rebuild.Photo six shows a large bubble maker, just add soapy water. I have another use for it.Photo seven shows how I welded up the ring.Photo eight shows it installed.Photo nine shows a little art work on it.Photo ten shows what it is for. Bucket of water to catch sparks.I will need to fix the top bar to keep it from arching but other than that it works as planned. Attached Images
Reply:Doesn't get the knife edge too hot huh as U work it lower speed, just guessing?  Is that why you like the longer length unit?  Came out nice, and will serve a long time now.  ? Bob have U ever heard of a fella near me, Yuma, named Weider who makes kinives?  I get a point to him once in awhile then nothing, don't know if he is retired, passed etc...  enjoy, BretPapaLionLincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools
Reply:I do not know your knife maker friend. The grinder is a variable speed it goes from a complete stop to Haul A$$. The finer the grit, the slower the speed.
Reply:Nice job, Bob!!! That grinder will sit still for you now.                           MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:what is the difference between a belt grinder and a belt sander?  I would have called your machine a belt sander.
Reply:It could probably be called either. This was designed for the purpose of grinding knife blades (and has ground 100's). It is called a KMG (Knife Maker's Grinder) by the manufacturer, Beaumont Metalworks.  All knife makers call their 2"X72" machines grinders as do many manufacturers like Burr King, Bader, Wilton and others.
Reply:bob,it looks like beaumont only sells a smooth contact wheel on their machine.thats great for polishing but bad for roughing. use a serated wheel and you'll be in heaven.
Reply:Bob, I have nothing to add to your post, but I'm glad to see what you are up to.How's it going?
Reply:boatbuoy,This thing will hog like nobody's business. I don't like Serrated wheels, they bounce. Just got to know how to do what you want to do.Thanks for all the replies.
Reply:Very nice work, nice welds.Question: Why is the flat 'table' so large?  It seems way more steel then you need for that tool.  Is that just a place to locate support tools when you are working? I understand the motor controller.. I'm talking about the large space on the opposite side of the grinder from the motor controller.--zip
Reply:That is where I will have knives in various stages of progress.
Reply:If it is used for metal, it is a belt grinder. If not, it's a belt sander. Or at least that's how it was explained to me.Miller Syncrowave 180SD
