This is my latest trailer and the last I will do for a while. It is 5 X 10 not including the tail. The frame is 3X2 tube with a .120 wall thickness. The neck is 3X3 .250 wall. The bed tilts up and I have a gas shock to assist the bed but now that I have put the wood down, its a little too heavy to lift and stay by itself so I have a little adjusting to do. I had some base/clear paint that matched my Dodge but had trouble with it reacting to primer and didnt have enough paint to overcome the problem so I went with Rustoleum. Its inexpensive and Home Depot sells it by the gallon. It tows great and is very quiet. The welding was done with my Miller DVI wire feed and my Syncrowave 180.I built and sold these a few years back but I am going to keep this one for a while.UA Local 598
Reply:Very nice, I like the design of it. What did you use to treat your lumber with?
Reply:I take it to the quarter wash and put liquid car wax on it. It preserves the wood pretty well. I suppose I could have used treated lumber or stained it before installing on the trailer but by the time I get to the wood, I am ready to have the trailer done. The wood and decals are the last things I do to my trailers.UA Local 598
Reply:What size (amps) of welder would you need for that, would you use stick or MIG?I have a 200 amp Tig and Stick welder, I'm thinking it could do most of the work (except maybe weld that .250 stuff).Regards to all.Working on cars and bikes is my hobby, learning to weld the pieces together is my quest.
Reply:beautful. Got plans?
Reply:DavidSim, your 200 should have no trouble welding the 1/4 inch material but you still should bevel it. I didnt weld my 1/4 inch because the neck needed to raise and lower to tilt the bed so its one long piece.Pyro...No plans. I build many 5 X 10 trailers and they are so simple to build. I took a little extra time building the tilt mechanism and have better ideas for future trailers.UA Local 598
Reply:DavidSim - your machine should be more than capable to weld up 1/4" with some good beads, i normally run my 1/8" 7018's around 115-125 depending on what position im working in and have great penetration.WHughes - nice trailer. i like the idea of the gas assisted shock for the tilt. most of the tilt trailers ive used you either have to walk up and force it to tilt with the front tires of the tractor, or get someone to stand on it to tiltI break things for a living...

Reply:That's a nice little trailer. What kind of capacity does it have? I'm guessing around 1500 lbs (don't be insulted if I guessed low)

Reply:Nice work. So it is a 6x10 with a 2ft dovetail----12ft or so? Just curious, how far back did you set your axles?GeezerPower Mig 255C185 TIGBlue 175 MIGRanger 8 Kohler 20HP1974 5K Lincoln/Wisconsin Powered (Cherry)Victor/Harris O/AK 487 Spool Gun
Reply:Its a 5 X 10 plus 16 inches at the tail. It weighs about 900 lbs and the axle is a 3500. I dont think I would put 2600 lbs on it. Thats alot of weigh for one axle even though its rated for it. I would feel good about putting around 2000 on it but it will never see that much under my use of it. Geezer, that axle is 48 inches forward from rear main frame.(where tail attaches)Last edited by WHughes; 04-23-2010 at 10:11 AM.UA Local 598
Reply:At some point in time I'd like to build something like this...once my skills get better and I have more confidence in my welds from a structural standpoint. I'm currently using a Norther Tool MIG 135. Will it weld steel such as this, or should I move up to a 220 welder when my skills improve? Thanks in advance. All replies welcomed.
Reply:Clean and nice lines on the trailer. But you didn't show any pics of the welds. The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...

Reply:Very Nice About how much in materials? (sorry I do not want to be a jerk) I want to make one someday for myself. I just hate buying something i can make.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio

Reply:I did build a 6X12 a fews years back with a 4 foot rear gate and a 4 foot folding side gate that folded to 2 feet to match the 2 foot rail around it. I posted it years ago on this site. I sold it to a friend and he really puts the screws to it. I went to 5X10 to keep the waste down. its easy to get 5's and 10's from the 20 foot sticks. I had alot of wasted material when I built the 6X12.Last edited by WHughes; 04-23-2010 at 11:17 PM.Reason: found pics of old 6X12 trailerUA Local 598Very nice work. I had alot of wasted material when I built the 6X12.I have a couple more to build (sometime) and they will be smaller. Your point about waste simply reinforces a smaller footprint. The 12ft I am finishing was a requirement of a friend. BTW, nice touch with the fold down gate to match the side rails. Thanks for posting,.I meant to ask, the tread or diamond plate front and aft of the fenders. Is that bolt-on aluminum or painted steel? Nice touchLast edited by geezer; 04-24-2010 at 08:08 AM.GeezerPower Mig 255C185 TIGBlue 175 MIGRanger 8 Kohler 20HP1974 5K Lincoln/Wisconsin Powered (Cherry)Victor/Harris O/AK 487 Spool Gun
Reply:That is awesome. Great job. I'm planning on building a 5x8 teardrop trailer when I finish my 36 Dodge. I've been kicking around using some 8" Aluminum channnel I have at work and reinforcing it with a steel frame. You get into some dissimilar metal issues but they have isolation tape I could use.Again that is an awesome looking trailer. You did a great job on it.
Reply:Thanks guys,The aluminum tread plates in front and behind the fenders are riveted on. When I worked for Northwest Jet Boats, I was allowed to use some of the drop aluminum scrap so I made the tread plates that go in front of the fender for ten trailers. When I started this last trailer, I knew I wanted one behind the fender so I went in and made them. I wasnt working there at the time, but left on good terms and they didnt mind me coming in from time to time to use equipment. They have since sold Northwest Jet to a company in Idaho so I dont know where I will buy aluminum in the future (for the price I want to pay) and I will have to build or buy a small press brake.UA Local 598 |
