Ok, So as I start to gear up for my smoker build, I need to figure out what kind of paint I need to get for the project. I'm not wanting to spend an arm and a leg to get a custome color, but I don't want flat black either. What temp rating do I need to get, and who supplies multilple colors beyond the normal Red Black orange? I know Rust-o-leum makes good paint, but the color selection is limited in my area that I have found. I have the ability to do either spray can or spray gun. so it doesn't need to be limited to just the spray cans. but then again, I only need enough to do two or three coats on two 55 gal drums. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:most grills ive seen are flat black, at least the fire box, all depends what temp different parts of the smoker are going tobeOf all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...

Reply:Well if I stick with what ever will work for the fire box it's not going to get hotter in anywhere else in the smoker.Flat black would work, was just looking for something with a little more "kick" to it. Something to add to the wow factor. Nothing to gaudy, but something that compliments the grill and shelving that's going with it.There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:I don't use paint, I season my smokers/BBQs like I do cast iron pots & pans. I smear a light coat of lard on them & then burn them hot with lots of wood. Of course that will give you a black finish. I tried many brands of heat paint first, none of them lasted longer than a year. Seasoning them has lasted a couple of years longer, so far. We have dry heat here tho, with virtually no moisture.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches

Reply:T'sHammer,http://www.jegs.com/p/VHT/VHT-Flame-...49303/10002/-1 I've looked at this as a possible solution but as written before the paint doesn't last long. Depending on your smoker design you could maybe add some color accents to a mostly flat black unit away from the firebox area and adjoining surfaces. I'm starting a modification to a offset smoker and one of the final things I'll do is blast the firebox and repaint.  I am not pimping it out, just trying to slow the rusting of the uncoated metal areound firebox. I have tried to get a temp of the hottest part of the firebox but it pegs the readout of my IR thermometer at 650F.  The VHT says 1000F for ~30 minutes.   Are you gonna post some pics of the smoker in process? How does the song lyric go?  ...better to burn out than rust away... why does that seem to get tougher as I get older though? Fillethead
Reply:My bad:   The VHT says 1000F for ~30 minutes.  That is a curing time/temp.Assasinworks had it before. 1300-2000F.   That is better than what Krylon states their's can withstand.
Reply:Thor "nice" high heat really is limited to mostly black and well black. There are some silver aluminum looking high heats but not as good as the blacks and silver and sun dont get along well either. The high heat rustoleum is pretty standard for most pit builders and if you prep the metal properly it sticks real good and lasts like forever. I usually sand blast my projects so the paint stays good. Also some guys claims to use wd 40 on the black paint and it will never rust or burn off but I have never been brave enough to do that, I just retouch  once per year usually. The rustoleum HH is 1200 degrees, do wish someone invented cans that poured better but then we wouldnt waste so much paint and they would sell less right. For colors you pretyy much have to use engine or header paint as mentioned. The Rustoleum has a nice sheen to it like satin finishes if you prep right and spray with a good gun. This was last months project. Attached Images
