So i tred some different weaves while stick welding and this was the best one i ended up with. I used a z (zig zag type weave) and it turned out ok. I tried the half moon but it didnt really look how i thought it would turn out. In these pics i used 6013 on 1/8 plate around 80amps and beveled the pieces at 22 degrees.  Please feel free to help/ post pics of your weaving.
Reply:Your weave should be no more than 3X the rod diameter. Mo heat, no bevel needed for 1/8"Where the heck did  you get that rusty plate?I can't see where you cut the weld.  could you show that?David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Theres alot of scrap plate layin around in my area. I didn't cut the plate but i will try to get a pic of that though. ThanksShane
Reply:Ummmmm......... Wow.Later,Jason
Reply:First off there you shouldn't be weaving on 1/8th material.   As David said, turn up the heat.  To be perfectly honest you would be better off not weaving in the first place.  run stringers.....  The only time that I run a weave is if I am running a cap, and also get some better plate.  You are doing yourself more harm than good by practicing on metal that rusty...I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Ok i realized that everything in those pics are wrong LOL. I was just playing around on scrap and trying to get those nice weave patterns with stick. Thanks for the tips guysShane
Reply:Shane,We all had to start out somewhere, but if I may respectfully make a constructive suggestion to help you in learning how to weld, I would suggest that you invest in some welding How-To books to get you started correctly on the basics.Bevelled Plate, Open Root, No Backing, is NOT the place for you to start "Learning"To help you out, bevels are usually 30 degrees ( sometimes up to 37 degrees) The key to making that type of weld work is your land, and gap - Both you will learn about and understand by reading some books.A couple of books you may wish to look at:Original Version:HPBooks #573 Welder's Handbook by Richard Finch and Tom MonroeISBN 0-89586-257-3Published 1985Same Book -Completely Revised and Updated Edition HPBooks #1264 Welder's Handbook by Richard FinchISBN 1-55788-264-9Published 1997I would suggest these over the more technical books, as the author does a fairly good job writing down the information in layman's terms so everyone can understand, and can quickly get to welding.  Information is a little biased, but it should serve it's purpose. After you learn more of the basics, you will be ready for the more technical manuals. Before you tackle Lincoln's Welding Bible, they also print a handy pocket-sized Stick Electrode Guide (available at your LWS) that shows different electrodes and settings for different applications.  Also demonstrates some basic electrode manipulation techniques - there are MANY more than the basic weave.  Takes too long to explain, better for you to just get the Electrode Guide. No offense was intended, hopefully none was taken.Have a good night.Last edited by Black Wolf; 11-09-2008 at 09:10 PM.Later,Jason
Reply:Jason, None was taken, I already have some welding books but i would like to get the lincoln bible though. Its not like im new to welding ive been miggin for decent amount but stick is pretty new to me. I got the hang and running stringers proficient but i deciced to try one of those stitch welds. I actually ran a 6011 root and then the 6013 cap. Im limited to low amps (120v power source) so thats why i tried the bevel on 1/8,root then cap, and tried to weave it.(the smaller version lol) I thought the aws standard was a like a 22 degree bevel. Thanks for all the advice jason Shane
Reply:Up here, in my corner of the industry, we use 6010 and 7018 more than anything else for stick electrodes. 1/8" 6010 DC Reverse Polarity (+) at 80 - 85 amps.3/32" 7018 DC Reverse Polarity (+) at 90-100 amps.Note to Bob & the Mods - I'm not trying to alter membership - I'm just gonna save myself some typing.....Link to how we set up our weld coupons:http://www.millerwelds.com/resources...ad.php?t=14338Link to welding techniques... Yes, it IS for GMAW, but I use the same general technique with SMAW.  Whole thread has value, my descriptions start on page 2, post #19.http://www.millerwelds.com/resources...ad.php?t=14203Hope that helps.Last edited by Black Wolf; 11-10-2008 at 12:16 AM.Reason: added linksLater,Jason
