Hey guys, got a quick question for you...Im looking to buy an oxy/acetylene setup for brazing, and i was wondering if everyone thought its a better idea to purchase your own tanks and have them filled, or just rent from a company like airgas or something...any input would be much appreciated! Also, any recommendations for an affordable valve and torch setup?  it wont be used in an industrial application, i want to play around with brazing my own lugged fixed gear bicycles
Reply:You could consider one of those complete portable sets that include a 20CF oxygen and 10CF acetylene bottles, gauges, hoses, valve head with welding and cutting tips, striker, goggles and carrier.  Import units go for around $300 and you'll pay a bit more at your LWS.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:I bought my small set up for $175. it was a medium duty radnor torch and gages made by victor (it included everything except bottles). I own my own bottles and run LP. I would suggest you look into LP because everyone has propane bottles.I would rent the oxy bottle until you have enough money to buy one. Then in a year or so purchase a 200 cf oxy bottle.
Reply:thanks guys!  i actually already own a propane torch...does that burn hot enough to fillet braze?

Reply:Originally Posted by Fat BastardOk so is it better to own or rent??? That is the question, right? Assumes no cost difference for filling owned vs rented CYLINDERS (not tanks)I would think it is a matter of how you expense them assuming you are a business. But then I see you say you want to play with some bicycles... not a business. So then it becomes a matter of how much you want to invest into your hobby?By renting you pay fees for having them sitting, waiting for you to come and play. If you take a brake from the brazing for a while you are still paying. I see it this way if you got the bucks to buy then do so. The cylinders will have a near full resale value in 20 years or 20 minutes.
Reply:to open a lock you can yse a tool called a slide hammer it works on any lock that can acept a key.
Reply:It has about become a non- issue here. I stopped by my LWS last Friday and visited with the owner for a while. They have two family owned stores, one here and one in the next town. Neither store rents bottles anymore. He said the expense involved with replacing rented bottles that people disappear with had gotten to be too much. You can buy your bottles and if you decide you don't need them anymore they will buy them back.

Reply:Originally Posted by punkfreeriderhahaha i like your disclaimer, but honostly i think your response was the most helpful so far...and so i think my plan is to buy a setup that includes small 10 and 20 cf CYLINDERS and buy bigger ones once i have some more extra cash.  i tig weld for a living, but dont own a welder, and it has been a dream of mine to build bicycles, and i figure buying a brazing kit and building some lugged bicycles is the cheapest and simplest way to figure out how to build jigs, setup and prepare the tubes, and just figure everything else out   thanks again, i really appreciate your response!
