folding sawhorse

I built this at work to try to save some space.I'm not sure if I'm happy with the chains. I may use some 1 1/2 1/4 flat on the next one. Reply:Probably should've applied for a patent! If you think about it for a min. you can make it out of alot of different sized and shaped steel. I used 2 inch channel, 1 3/8 solid round and 1 1/4 pipe. That's what I had laying around and we use them to put 5'x10' 10ga. steel sheets on for cutting. Sometimes we will use two or three and put a dumpster on them so we can stay up off the floor. I didn't weigh it on a scale but, I'd say it's around 20lbs. Reply:That's a cool idea.I built two on the same idea 16 years ago out of pipe. The one addition that I did was to weld in large nuts in the end of the pipes. I then cut to short pieces of angle that I screwed on a piece of wood. Now I can add the wood to my saw horses for doing carpentry wood. You see, I bought the sawhorses at a factory auction once, 100's of them. I ended up junking a bunch of them, because they were such a pain to handle. It was tough to fork more than two at a time, they took up a lot of room, they wouldn't stack, they wouldn't nest; it was just impossible to secure a decent load of them on a truck.  I wish I had thought about cutting off two legs!

Reply:Good job!!! they look similar to a pair I made for myself a few yrs ago. I made mine out of 1 1/2" sq tube w/ .060 wall.  I made a built in stop at the juncture of the legs, so no chains or strap required, however I wouldn't want to really test their strength either. Reply:heimbuckwelding, you patented those? I seen plans for saw horses just like yours in a 1950's lincoln welding book. they didn't have the wood on theirs of course. i built a set like that for a customer about 15 years ago.
