So in the picture it shows titanium plumbing for a turbo kit. I was looking at it and told my friend that the pipes were getting too hot. He said they use electrolysis to get the blue color. So question is, can you get these colors on exotic metals like this?....I'm just trying to figure out how the process works because I thought they use electrolysis for cleaning of metals...? Kinda looks like they heated up the areas with a torch or something. Unless he meant some other process but he said electrolysis i know that for sure. Thanks people,Josh Attached ImagesMiller Dynasty 200Millermatic 211Instagram?.... find me @ WELD_MEDIC
Reply:The process you are thinking of is called anodizing, but it is an electrolytic process. However, the blue color on the tubes pictured is not uniform and does not look intentional, leading me to think it is caused by heat.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:That is defiently heat marks see the difference in the shading of the blue .
Reply:doesn't make much sense though...the pipe going into the throttle body is the "cold pipe".Guys who pay to get titanium intercooler piping don't just do it for the material, they do it for the "bling", so companies do intentionally blue stuff like that a lot, too.Hobart EZ-Tig newbie.
Reply:well thats what i was thinking, the cold air piping shouldn't be getting that hot. I think he's full of s#!^ and it's been manually done with a torch or something....Miller Dynasty 200Millermatic 211Instagram?.... find me @ WELD_MEDIC
Reply:so just to clarify I was able to get a hold of him and ask how it was done. He said they dipped the pipes in NACl solution and applied electric current to the solution. The longer the pipes are in the solution the darker they get. Interesting......Miller Dynasty 200Millermatic 211Instagram?.... find me @ WELD_MEDIC
Reply:Doesn't explain the blue portion in the center of the 'hot' pipe though, haha. I can see the compressor outlet being hot.......but hot enough to deep blue the titanium pipe? probably not. titanium exhaust systems don't turn all blue and that heat is a bit higher most of the time, IMO.^-- is jealous of titanium IC piping.Hobart EZ-Tig newbie.
Reply:Yeah the compressor outlet gets hot but not that hot. This is what he replied with:"Titanium kits are made here in Portland by my Friend JR at Extreme Turbo Systems. Titinum changes colors in a saline solution using low voltage methods. Basically we have a large tank of saline solution. The NaCl solution conducts eletricity and you just dip the part you want to change color into it. Hence why its only on bend apex's and tips. ITs how it sits in the fluid. The longer it stays in the darker it gets."Makes sense now.Miller Dynasty 200Millermatic 211Instagram?.... find me @ WELD_MEDIC
Reply:I'm just confused then how they got blue on the straight part of the pipe, haha.Hobart EZ-Tig newbie. |
