I have been looking for the information that would lead me to the correct modifications for a first generation MM200 to run flux core wire for outdoor projects. Thanks for everyone's input in advance.
Reply:If you can change the polarity from electrode positive to electrode negative you should be good to go.  Generally the self shielded flux-core wires run DCEN, and the hardwire and gas-shielded flux-core wires run DCEP.  You won't need a mig gun assembly with a diffuser for gas, but you could just remove the nozzle of your existing gun.  Hope that helps.Jay DavisAWS-CWIC-60 Specialty Welding ContractorLoving husband, and father of two boys (
Reply:Sounds like you have a second generation or later MM200 as the polarity can not be switched on first generation machines. At least not without modifications to the machine.To answer your question though, yes, what you described IF you plan on using the MIG process with solid wire and shielding gas. To use fluxcore (without gas) you would use straight polarity where the electrode (gun) is negative and the work clamp is positive.Obviously you will also need to insert the RANGE connector in either the LOW or HIGH receptacle based on the required voltage range for the material being welded. The unit manual or chart on the inside of the feeder access door will give you basic guidlines to work from for "dialing in" your settings for a particular material, wire size, position, etc.On most mig machines I understand that this is the case but one thread eluded to the problems with the 1st gen MM200 as being a wiring modification required and since I'm rebuilding this machine already, if it isn't to involved,I should add it to the list of things to do.Last edited by poorwelder; 03-21-2012 at 02:17 AM.Reason: duaneb55 had a answer and I want it
Reply:Hi,I have just purchased a first gen MM200 and am interested in the wiring mod to use fcaw. I bought it after talking with the Miller dealer and being told it would run non sheilded flux core wire. I did not know at the time that it was a first gen so no fault of the dealer.
