I have a friend who was given some welding rod, who in turn gave them to me. I think they are hard facing rods but I'm not sure and can't find anything on the computer about them. It's a brand new 10 lb. box and they are manufactured by Deloro Stellite Inc. and go by the Brand name of Stoody. The rods are 5/32" 2110 rods, am I right in thinking it is a hard facing rod? Any one know for sure? DaveI am what I am, Deal with it!If necessity is the Mother of Invention, I must be the Father of Desperation!
Reply:Are they black? We have some hardfacing rod and they are black..Stellite may be a clue..Very hard stuff.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I just opened the foil package and took one out of the box and they are greyish in color. It also says coated for ac/dc application. DaveI am what I am, Deal with it!If necessity is the Mother of Invention, I must be the Father of Desperation!

Reply:Stellite is hard facing and used to product the rods for Study, but no more.  Google Stellite and go to their web site for their help.  JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:You have the answer in the page of deloro: http://www.stellite.com/  .Stellite is hardfacind wear resistant cobalt alloy. (Use preheat and slow cooling to weld).
Reply:Stoody® 2110 - This electrode is formulated for build up and joining of manganese steels and/or carbon steels. It is modified high chromium–high manganese steel that combines toughness and wear resistance.2110 will workharden rapidly with impact providing a good wear resistance surface or it can be used as a base for subsequent hardfacing layers. Not recommended for cast iron.i googled 2110 stoody and this was on airgas.com

Reply:Stoody 2110 is extreme impact resistant, higher than normal hard surfacing electrodes, but sacrifices some abrasion resistance for that extreme impact resistance. it used to be used for building back up surfaces and then hard facing over it. think it was also used in dredging and things that needed a super high impact resistance.rojodiablo - stoody used to make coated and bare rods (believe they still do) for oxyfuel welding. stoodite, tube stoodite, stoody 6, stoody 1, stoody 21 and stoody self-hardening were all rods that came either bare or coated that you could use. never tried tig with them, but if you can oxy-fuel them then i can see no reason why you could not tig them as well. most are very easy to oxy-fuel with and you will be surprised at the low heat they use. you would think a super hard rod would need a ton of heat but they don't. we might even still have some at school although we haven't taught that in years.johnjohnwelding instructorwww.williamrmoore.orgMooreTech College of Technologywelder/fabricatorJGWilson, Inc.www.jgwilson.com
Reply:Rojo,Stoody lists (in at least one document that I have, don't feel like looking it up on the website right now, but you /ahem/ could look it up yourself on www.stoody.com or via the Thermadyne corp/parent website and then surf down to the Stoody section/area) Stoodite 6 and Stoodite 21 as GTAW applicable in their Top-20 products listing.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:I was going to fix a few chipped edges on my 70# anvil a while back and Stoody recommended 2110 . It's a work hardening alloy so the more you beat on it, the harder it gets. This article also recommends it for a base layer-> LINK .Feel like selling  a few lbs of what you have? It's very hard to get 2110 in small qty, and I only have a small area that needs it.-Matt------------------------------------------

Reply:Some of these coated rods have alloying material in the coating, and with some, TIGing the coating will cause spitting which contaminates the tungsten. Stoody makes bare tungsten carbide rod for use with gas, but a TIG flame is too hot and tends to melt the carbide so you end up with a surface of high carbon, high tungston alloy, not granules of tungston carbide as wanted.Stoody now does have some MIG wires, which I assume could be successfully TIG welded, if needed.
Reply:Rojo,For use with GTAW, Stoody lists (at a quick and not necessarily complete glance) the following fillers:Stoodite 1, 6, 12, 21Stoody T-800, T-900, 50, 60Oh, and dabar and vulcan (Roman version of the forging/smithing god  ), that 5/32 2110 has recommended parameters of 125-190 amps either AC or DC-reverse (DC +) polarity.  It is a modified high-chromium and high-manganese steel alloy that is non-magnetic, cannot be flame-cut, is machinable with carbide tools (I assume in the non-work-hardened condition), and goes from about 200BHN as-applied to Rc 48-55 after workhardening (depending on base material and number of layers, etc).  The best laid schemes ... Reply:Awesome guys. Thanks. Now, all I need to do is get two nickels to rub together to buy a pound of the stuff. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
