every year my mothers mailbox gets knocked over by the snow blown off the road by the snowplows, so this year im gonna make a guard for that out or some scrap 3"long by 1/4 diameter rebar and plywood.  my question is, what degree would you bevel the rebar to weld them end to end, and how many passes would you guys make?  i was thinking a    45* angle and a root pass, two passes on top of that, and then a cap...Im gonna be tig'n it since that is what i have access to at work haha...any advice would be greatly appreciated
Reply:To weld rebar it needs to be the weldable type.It will have a C60 W stamped on the end of the rebar.Rebar has a very high carbon content and if you weld regular non weldablerebar it can easily break. It needs to be preheated . Bars 6 (19) use 300ºF For bars 7 (22) or larger use 500ºF. You can use a temp crayon.Use 7018 filler up to 9 hours after opening package. If you really want to know the right way to do a butt weld on weldable rebar order the American Welding Society publication ANS/AWS D1.4-98Structural welding Code- Rienforcing Steel. It also shows allowable bends of rebar.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 12-12-2008 at 06:06 PM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:tigging 1/4 inch rebar with a root two passes and a cap for a plywood reinforced mailbox?
Reply:not a plywood reinforced mailbox...a shield to go in front of the mailbox to protect from the snow thrown from a plow...rebar pounded into the ground and the plywood attached to it
Reply:sounds like a lot of weld for 1/4 rebar-- if the impurities  arent too bad and you can get a decent bead, im thinking one tig pass should be plenty..consider a 2" lap weld, easier than trying to get 45s together..just lay the rods side by side and get some puddle in the vallies on both sides..
Reply:a snowplow will laugh at 1/4 rebar.I would upgrade the post on the mailbox and maybe relocate it a bit.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:to adjust a plow, get some 10 inch sch 80  pipe about 6 feet into the ground with a few yards of concrete around it and in it...heeheehee
Reply:I passed my rebar tests on #4 #8  #12 bar with NR232 and zero preheat.   for a mail box gaurd i wouldnt worry about any preheatVantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.

Reply:I've seen a mailbox mounted on a coil spring before......I also welded rebar with one pass of ER70S6 and 75/25 gas to make a disposable boat anchor. (For rocky areas.) Still haven't tried the anchor...~~~City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Reply:Swiveling mail box posts don't work if the post is in heavy snow to start with. The one on the farm is an inverted 'J' shape, with a 2x6 bolted to the bottom forming an inverted '4', with a large garage door spring going to the tip of the 'J' to the base which pulls the mailbox back inline with the base..  If the snow plow comes by & throws snow on it, it just gets buried.  If there is a lot of snow behind it, the 2x6 gets snapped off & is easily replaced.  Once you find the mail box, it's usually about 100 yards away buried in the snow.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:Rebar is Rebar. W and S bar are one in the same for your project. You will want to use 70s2 tig filler and common practice is half the thickness of the bar for the weld thickness. i.e. 1/2" Rebar requires 1/4" welds. Bevel as if it were any other material and run your pass. Over lap your welds if you dont make it on pass. If this were my project, Id use #4 or #5 bar. Its still easy enough to roll and bend with a vise, hammer and an adjustable wrench or pipe.
