is there a differance in tig welders arc - example diversion 165 - dx200? or is it just options fine tuning - pulse ext?
Reply:If you are asking about Millers Dynasty 200DX and the Diversion 165, there's a huge difference in the machines and that effects their performance. You can make a lot of adjustments to the arc with the Dynasty that's simply not possible with the Diversion that will allow you to do more at the same amps output. With AC alum, the Dynasty  or even a Syncrowave, will allow you to adjust your AC balance to get either more cleaning action or more penetration at the same amps, something that's not possible with the fixed settings of the Diversion. Same applies with the frequency control and wave forms that are available on the Dynasty. The real question is will those added features justify the extra cost. If we had a better idea what you are trying to accomplish, we could probably give you better advice. Personally I think the Diversion is over priced for what you get. You give up too many options over say a Syncrowave 200 that costs just a bit more money. You loose the ability to run stick as well as the ability to adjust your AC balance with the Diversion, as well as have a torch setup that doesn't lend itself well to upgrades..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:i already have a 165 i understand its a entry level machine thats what i bought it for ... to learn.... im looking at a stainless steel job welding flanges. mostly dc welding. im geting into pipe work and need to be able to move around out in the field for repairs ect. my LWS has new 200dx machine with contractor kit for 3k, well they where used one weekend for a show. just dont really know if that will best fit me
Reply:If you are only doing DC, you can probably get away with a Maxstar 150 or better yet the Maxstar 200 as long as you don't need to run 6010. The Maxstar 200 has about the most output on 115v as any machine out there IIRC. The Dynasty 200 is a very close 2nd however. I'd need to pull up the specs on all 3 again and look at what the machines draw to be sure. Cost wise the Maxstar 150 would probably be your best bet if all you really need is a portable DC tig machine. If it's between the Maxstar 200DX vs the Dynasty 200DX, the extra $600 or so to get an AC tig for work would be a tough call. I'd probably go for it simply to have the ability to do Ac tig. If AC output wasn't a factor, the Maxstar would win hands down. The Maxstars don't run 6010 well. The Dynasty's are specifically designed to run 6010. A big factor if you need to run 6010 root passes with pipe. If you tig your roots, I don't think the added features of the Dynasty will gain you anything on DC. Most of those extras are all primarily aimed at AC tig rather than DC tig.$3K for the Dynasty 200DX with the kit is a fair price. That's about what Cyberweld shows the Maxstar 200 DX packages for. Cyberweld shows the Dynasty  kit for $3700-3800 or so depending on if it's got the finger tip controller or the foot pedal.http://store.cyberweld.com/miactigwe...FUh-5QodGnC8jA.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:ok. i know i need to run 6010. i will look into the dynasty! thanks much
Reply:The Dynasty is a great machine. I bought mine because I felt getting a TIG would help me. First job I did with it, that damn near paid itself off, was running 6013's on sheet metal off 110v. It has adjustable dig for stick welding, and you can adjust the OCV as well. The only annoying thing is I haven't been able to find a quick disconnect for the air cooled tig torch's argon connector, so I have to constantly disconnect and reconnect the small hose from the faceplate to the tig cable, and I eventually cracked it from constantly connecting/disconnecting it for storage or for swapping in stick welding leads. Nothing a bit of tape and heatshrink didn't fix, but.. other than that, it's an amazing machine that has taken me years to grow into.. and I haven't outgrown it yet!Miller: 200dx, Bobcat 225, Passport, Powermax 45, Milwaukee: Dry Saw, MagDrill, grinders
Reply:Have you ran 6010 with your bobcat?  Was there a difference in arc compare to the dynasty? Or difference in how the rod burnedLast edited by grindel; 04-16-2012 at 07:48 PM.
Reply:I am looking for some good advice, I am looking at getting the Hobart handler 140, will I be dissapointed since it is not a 220 volt? This will be my first experience with a mig welder! I have done very little stick from a miller generator that the iron workers were using on the job site over the years,(not saying I knew what the heck I was doing) but the welds held! I mostly want one just to do as a hobby, tinker here and there? I appreciate your time!
Reply:Depending on what you plan on doing. It might work great or be under powered
Reply:if you want to weld 1/8 thick steel its good.  for lots less money get a used acdc tombstone and you'll have a stick welder...
Reply:what is difference between stick and mig? I have noticed I can get a stick for alot less money! They both weld?? Is it just that the mig is more neat?
Reply:There are a lot of differences none of which reflect on the price based on the neat factor. With a mig you set the machine for filler speed aswell as amperage. The machine controls the rate of feed you are responsible for arc lenth, angle, travel speed "puddle control"and applying the heat where it needs to be. With stick you control evrything and you will learn to have a steadier hand as a result. There are a lot more inner workings of a wire feed machine that what makes entry level machines seem more expensive than entry stick machines. If you are just trying to learn I would suggest starting with stick, you cant beat a lincoln ac/dc tombstone for the money. It will make you better down the road, a mig will come fast once you learn to produce decent stick welds.
