Digging around in boxes has me feeling like a "has been".Below pictures were taken around 1990-91. It's a con-rod pin for a 4000ton National forging press. The pin was machined to remove fatigued material and built up with Weld Mold 535 3/32" cored wire. About 300lbs applied. That fella filling the sub-arc hopper and a small group of employees bought the company a few years after I left them, and are doing well. "Gotta love that"!Matt Attached Images

So the OD of the pin was reduced (most likely via cutting on a lathe) and then it was built back up with about 300 pounds of added weld metal (via the SAW aka sub-arc welding process). Then that big pin with all the added weld metal was taken to a lathe and the OD was machined back to the 'correct' desired dimensions and the pin then put back into the big press and the press could then be put back into service.

Reply:I ran a sub arc welder not that size but the idea was the same.
