I just picked up a HF 4x6 band saw over the weekend, and figured a cart for my HH140 and 80 cf cylinder would be a good break-in project for it.Here's some weld shots. I think I might be getting better (to my eyes anyway)... And a vertical up...One of my better beads I think...Attaching the expanded metal for shelf...Almost the finished product... (handle on the front, and the 2 posts on the side are a cord wrap)And the grand finale...I'm a little bummed that it seems to be back-heavy, hence the scrap metal sitting on the bottom shelf. I'm just not sure of the best way to fix it. I guess I could cut the top off and move it forward. Any opinions or thoughts? Reply:Not bad at all. Some of your welds seem a bit cold but not bad at all. Especially not bad for your second project
Reply:If you are happy with all of the other dimensions it might be better to just make a wider shelf for your bottle and then mount your wheels at the back. That is what I would do if I was happy with everything else.

Reply:make sure there's oil in the rectangular cavity of the HF horizontal saw, otherwise, you'll be making a trip to return it. ask how i know.

JohnR - How would I go about running hotter? I'm already maxed out on amps I believe. Settings on the little HH140 are 1-2-3-4 and I'm set to 4. Would I increase the wire feed speed (currently set to 50)? Or slow down travel speed? Sorry for the basic questions, I'm still pretty new to all this. oxy moron - Good tip! Reply:If you run your wire speed much faster than 50-60 on your welder, you will probably end up with wire stubbing. Maintain a short stickout (1/4"). Penetration on 11 gauge or thicker is not ideal with 110volt MIG welders with solid wire + gas. Another option would be to use self-shielding fluxcore wire (E71T-GS or E71T-11) for thicker metal. It will run hotter than solid wire + gas. Don't forget to change polarity.Use MIG for thinner stuff and self-shielding fluxcore for the thicker stuff. Your next project should be a bigger and better base for your HF 4x6 band saw. The one that comes with it is ultra flimsy and will eventually allow the band saw to tip over (if you are not very careful).

Reply:just remember on vertical welds you wanna go uphill....look like you went downhill. i only recommend downhill for a comsetic bead - ill run a bead up and then come back down to make it look better.I break things for a living...
Reply:The best way to learn is by doing the actual stuff, not playing with scrap.That said. Be ready to grind off welds that you're not happy with, and do them over. Grindouts teach you lot because you get tired of doing it wrong. Don't put your name on it until you're happy with it.Wrap your corners, don't leave gaps. Start just over the edge of the corner when you establish the arc, let it sit a while to deposit filler and heat the puddle up, helps prevent cold starts. A small circular motion sometimes help to get the puddle hot while not overfilling the corner. And continue beyond the corner when you finish the bead, blend it into the previous bead.The welds on the expanded are ok. Learn from them. You probably let the filler wash onto the expanded. That's puddle control Do the same with the fillets. Aim that sucker right into the joint, and watch the puddle build to the upper and lower toes. If need be, do a slight side to side wash. Forget about everything else in the universe but the puddle.Turn the machine up to the point of burnthrough, then dial it back, or change your travel speed to accomodate the higher volts.When you get to the point that upon flipping the hood you see what you want to see, you're getting there. If it's "sorta" ok, and you're willing to live with it, you be in the wrong endeavor. Do it over until you get it right.I still grind welds out. Reply:Just move the caster's back, or go to HF get 2 solid rubber 8" wheels, run an axle through the rearmost tube behind the tank, slap the wheels on it. Reply:Hey, Tod.Good job on your cart. And welcome to the Forum. I'm still learning, so I enjoy these posts.I have built 3-4 carts similar to yours. I use 6" lawn mower wheels (steel) with 1/2" rod for an axle 2.5" in from the the tank end. A couple of pieces of angle iron under the frame with 1/2" hole will be close to level with 2.5" swivel casters on the front. Some 1/2" washers and 2 cotter pins and you are in business. That will solve your stability concern and have plenty of support under the tank. Next time you might lower the top shelf to around 14" from the bottom frame to lower the center of gravity. I know you want to match the Hobart orange, but in case you need it, Ford Tractor Gray matches the white very close!
