Reply:Hi the problem i am having is I can not get the weld to puddle or flow,it just keep burning the tungstin, can I be low on gas or does the gas go bad from stiting around I can say the gas is at least over 12 years old,I can hear it come out then I push the foot pedel,I had a litle luck on one side you can see in the first picture, the 2nd picture on luck,I am useing a stainless wire brush to clean the aluminum. Reply:From the 'General Welding Questions' section thread: OK, I'm no expert TIG weldor by any stretch of the imagination but I now have a couple observations and questions.1) I don't know for sure about the 12yo argon but I wouldn't think it can deteriorate over time. I would question whether or not it is in fact 100% argon of a mix like C-25 (75% argon / 25% C02) with that 'CHF 25' referrnce listed in your parameters.2) If not the shielding gas, it almost looks like contamination. Can there be oils and dirt migrating into the weld area from the back side?3) As a little side note, what was your arc length from tungsten to work piece? The closer the better with 1/16"-3/32" preferred.4) You're not just mashing the peddle to the max are you?Let's wait and see what the pros think.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:FWIW: I'm just a hobby weldor.70 amps is too cold. Since you have a pedal, set the machine to at least 150 amps.1/16" pure tungsten is too small and I don't use green anymore. I'd use a 3/32" of any other color. You could probably even use a 1/8" tungsten since there is so much mass. Grind to crayon type point and truncate; it will form its own ball as you weld.In your first pic I see a lot of oxide on the surface and I don't see any stainless brush marks. It may just be the angle of the pic.IMHO: If you can hear gas it should be ok. The only problem is you don't know it's 100% argon. But if it isn't, just starting an arc would probably blow that 1/16" tungsten off at the collet.9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training.
