i keep argueing with my welding teacher because i found that MIG welding for me was not that easy, i actually thought flux cored and stick was much easier, but actually yesterday my tacher came into my booth and showed his mig welds, wooowwww, he tought me if you use a little motion like whip and pause or circles it will make the weld look so much nicer, sooo i think hes winning the arguement, we'll see monday how my flat bend test goes to see if i like mig better. well anyway when he showed me the whip motion i tried it, first t-joint it didnt go so well but it got better toward the end it was more consistant at least  then for some reason my second t-joint- BOOOOM!!!- it was almost flawless and i had.......A STACK OF DIMES
Reply:I get a stack of pancakes.  A short stack on welds less than 1""Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Ask your instructor how he feels about normalizing your weld after you do it to relive the stresses,on the chits, I know way back it was stressed(to pardon the pun) considerably when I was in school, circa 1980, as the mig wire is so small and the current carrier. It has gotten so sophisticated on larger items.
Reply:When performing GMAW, with solid wire, It is important to not kill your voltage by moving your arc over your puddle. The arc needs to stay at the leading edge. By whipping forward and back you increase your chances of non fusion. Also, the stack of dimes is only desired when TIG welding (GTAW). You should be running stringers, with as little weave/whip as possible."Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful." -- Seneca the Younger
Reply:Some rippling on the surface looks nice on a mig weld, but save the stack of dimes look for tig and 6010.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:i find that when using MIG (GMAW) that weather im welding stringers or a weave. movement is needed. especially any position that isnt flat. MIG has a bad tendency to cold lap (no fusion). so make sure you preheat and get some movement in there. my teach has given many many discussions on the weave and the myth of it being "illegal" or not as good as the stringer. this is untrue in most cases (and in my opinion the weave looks much better). he even pulled out code books to show what it really states. now obviously you cannot do a weave 2 inches accross and keep the heat needed. but i have done many weaves that reach about an inch or more across at the face with no penetration problems. i know this cause we cut them in half and put etching solution to see the welds. just remember to keep the metal between 500-800 degrees when using MIG.Lincoln Square Wave 175 TIGLincoln 110v flux core welder (my 1st)Clarke 180EN MIG
