I bought a plasma cutter.......The other night I was wide friggin' awake at 2am..... thinking of my first project with my new tool......I want to make a logo sign for my garage........ and will cut it out of Aluminum with the Plasma.... (once I get the dryer and air compressor thing placed where i want them in the garage..... that's another story)....Question is....... how do I make a piece of Aluminum a different color, like BLUE or RED?There is something I have Googled called "Aluminum Black" from Birchwood Casey, but I didn't really want black....... I wanted BLUE or RED......Is there any "simple" way to make Aluminum a color (other than black) without going into the Anodizing process? (I have no plans to dink around with battery acid......)Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:Powder coating works well.
Reply:I agree......I don't have a powder coat set up....... it's just me in my garage....I do know a guy that can powder coat in town...... and he would probably charge me nothing...... but I kind of want to do this myself.......Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:You can get a Anodize look spray can. I think VHT has a version of it. I had a can of red at one time.http://www.vhtpaint.com/products/anodized/Last edited by LarryO; 04-25-2012 at 09:00 PM.
Reply:what about just doing a 'grinder' .......grind it with 3" roloc wheels in a swervy flamey pattern , then spray transparent kandy red , blue , green , black or just clear coat it thermal arc 252i - millermatic 350P - miller XMT, cp300ts, 30a 22a feeders, buttload of other millers, handfull of lincolns, couple of esabs - Hypertherm 1250 G3
Reply:cany colors is agreat idea!
Reply:Google Gilders Paste. I use it a lot and there is no end to what you can do with it. Here is a table with a two tone finish to look like antique bronze. This table is steel but it covers aluminum just as well. Attached Images
Reply:I have this book (Firearm blueing and browning) that shows old skool gun blueing methods and recipes with salts and acids by R.H. Angier but Its troublesome. I use a red layout fluid called CHEMDYE no DYCHEM or DYKEM. Its made to machine off or remove with acetone , girlfriends polish remover etc. I never used it as a permenent color but you could put several clear coats over it and do what your trying and it comes in blue. It will also help you layout if your freehanding.Last edited by Insaneride; 04-26-2012 at 12:24 AM.Reason: spelling and layout
Reply:Paint, powder coat, or color anodizing would be my first three guesses/choices for making a piece of aluminum blue or red. Not in any particular order.DIY anodizing is doable, just be careful with the chemicals. If you don't want to anodize it, then that leaves paint or other coatings. Pick whatever you want. No biggy. Reply:Anodizing works great. Clean it, hot water and food dye will make it red, blue or black easily... read up on details. It is fun, easy and cheap. Bob what you got there is interesting too. kool!If you can figure a way to make it Red White and Blue with a shiny Texas star...lemme' knowLincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools
Reply:Anodizing is fairly easy and makes the surface harder.:http://asuwlink.uwyo.edu/~metal/anodizing.html
Reply:Heres some pics of DYKEM on Al. It looks as good as anodize but doesnt surface harden and needs to be clear coated. Attached Images
Reply:I just use transparent airbrush paint
