I welded a bunch of couplings to plate for a customer.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=26837 The customer took them to a machine shop, and the machine shop called me and asked me to do some couplings for them. I can't show the piece, but its 7/8" thick, about 6" wide and forty something long. These are 3/8" couplings. The print called for a 1/8" fillet. It came out 3/16" with no undercutting. I clamped them to the positioner and worked around the length. Each piece gets 3 or 4 of these in different places. Holes are there and a pilot tool to hold the couplings in place. I tigged the first 24 because I didn't have time to build a jig, There are a total of 36 bars. The couplings come already cleaned up. Total 132 couplings.1/16" Er70S-6 1/16" tungsten couldn't take the heat, so went to 3/32 red or gold. Arcmaster 185, max 160 amps. I used most of em.Start Stop.I am going to see if they have a scrap one I can try pulsed spray on. David Last edited by David R; 01-17-2009 at 10:29 PM.Real world weldin. Reply:Nice David. Thanks for reminding me on how bad I need a positionerWith that P sparay you think it will be much faster? weld it like you own it
Reply:Once I build a jig and use pulsed spray, I should be able to knock these out in a day or less. It took at least 1/2 hour each bar using tig. They want a price per piece. If I bid it with tig, I won't get the job. If I build a jig and use pulsed spray, I'll make some good $s.These machined parts are a work of art what ever they are.Tig is pretty, but ..... $s countthey dropped off 12 bars, there are 36 total, I am going to do the rest of the job when all the pieces are here. If I turn my positioner vertical and use a counter weight, it should be easy. Its gonna look like an airplane propeller. David Last edited by David R; 01-18-2009 at 08:31 AM.Real world weldin. Reply:Sure looks like that positioner turned into a nice little investment for you. Might take a little practice with the spray to weld the heavey plate and lite coupler with out under cut. Keep us up to date with this and the cell tower project.
