I need to weld in a patch for a rusty floorboard. What are my options for my ground? I was just going tack a bolt near the area I need to patch, but am I going about it all wrong? Any other opinions? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2

Reply:I replaced a floor pan a month ago. 2 options. Weld a strip to the patch and use it to hold the ground OR get a ground magnet.
Reply:i put floor boards in a toyota truck last summer and used the cross bracing that was under the seat (which i had removed) to clamp my ground to. worked good.

It could be part of the vehicle frame, transmission, exhaust pipe, whatever. Something that's not painted or rusted etc.... The closer the ground to the weld arc, the better. Off topic, but worth mentioning.......Some people also recommend you disconnect the vehicle's ground battery terminal before arc welding, "just in case." The theory is that you might fry out some vehicle electronics or it's computer. Some argue that it's a needless procedure and not required. People debate that seperate subject like arguing which is better, (Ford vs. Chevy or Coke vs. Pepsi). The debate will go on for eternity and it's for a different topic. ....... And if your vehicle is not a unibody type, never ground use your frame as a ground either, I have been in this business for 28 years, doing mostly automotive welding ,so i think i speak from experience.Brian

Reply:I think I might just go with a magnetic clamp and make it easy. My local Tractor Supply lists them so I am gonna see if they have any in stock. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2 |
