I've been welding some heavier steel with 1078 rods at 140amps.  The steel is around 1 inch thick, but I find that i'm burning away a lot of the metal on the edge of the bead.  I'm guessing I'm just too hot, but I'm not positive, maybe my speed is too slow as well?
Reply:The correct amperage depends on the electrode diameter as well as the specific electrode and the welding position.1078 rods?  Did you mean 7018?  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:yeah 7018, my bad, i think it's 1/8 inch rod
Reply:I was running my 1/8" 7018 at 135 flat today, just right for me.  FYI I was welding 1/4" angle clips to a W8X10 beam web.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:post fotos..you must be crawling or right on a thin edge to be burning it off like that..and also try the same weld at 120 amps to see how it differs..
Reply:I run 1/8" 7018 at 145 to 155 on cold thick steel with no problem.  The recommended amps are 110 to 165.  I have run it at 165 and it will.On 1/4" or 3/8, Its usually around 140 amps.   This is all with lincoln Excalibur.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I will try increasing my speed a bit and see if that helps
Reply:i used to have a forum that would say you can't run to hot only to slow. good phrase for someboy who always wanted stuff done yesterday
