8 pound rods

When looking for a good deal on welding rods on Ebay , I found someone selling 3/4 inch 4 foot long 8 pound welding rods for a 1500 amp welder. Anyone using those rods can call himself a welder! I thought about buying one just for grins.

Reply:Don't think it's a joke. He has a picture of them on a chair and a part number also. Cor-Met F-25, 3/4 inch arc welding electrode used for flood welding
Reply:I did a google search and found this:The term flood welding was coined to describe a unique method of depositing vast amounts of weld metal. The flood welding process is normally applied on large dies and components such as bolster plates, hammer rams, die holders and ejector holders. The process is accomplished by using  large diameter coated welding electrodes (3/4” diameter x 36” long)

Reply:We have one of them in a case at the weld shop back in PA.  They're used for surfacing applications as mentioned, and are a giant stick electrode.  They fill voids/cavities from the bottom up typically.Last edited by Supe; 01-28-2009 at 12:22 PM.
Reply:Go to the Hobart board and look up spook 2 threads to see how these welding rods are used to weld Big Iron.
Reply:Think about the heat at the arc from 1500 amps and ¾ rod….I bet you would need one of those shinny space suits to be within 50 ft of the weld process.
