wire selection? i know that 309 is the go to wire for this task but i am curious if their are any other options out their. some one had told me about weldmond 808 but I am curious if this wire is intended for welding dissimilar metals. silver and brass brazing are also options if you have reason to recommend either of those
Reply:All depends on the end-use application.  With stainless and chrom-moly, is this a high stress joint?  Or high temp high stress?  Or corrosive environment?Brazing is potentially bad for these kinds of applications for a few reasons.  But it all depends on the particulars...Don't know anything about weldmond 808 off the top of my head.  Maybe someone else can comment...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:bicycle application; cast stainless 304 dropouts (where the rear wheel attaches to the frame) to cro-mo stays (the rest of the frame) this is a reasonable stressed joints and their will definitely be some flex going on so post weld ductility is important. no heat cycles will happen once in use
Reply:you want Hastelloy W.  AMS 5786
Reply:WHY? not that im doubting you im just one of those people that always wants to know. after doing a little looking it seems like that wires strength is in high temp environments, certainly not something i need but don't think it would hurt. thing is i only need a couple sticks of .045 i think i would get stuck buying a 10# box of that stuffLast edited by quasi; 01-27-2009 at 12:20 PM.
Reply:I'm not a metallurgist, but I deal with them and learn.  Hastelloy W is a good choice because it doesn't require stress relieving after joining different metal types.  It is certainly good for high temp applications(I use it alot on the turbines I weld) but will work great for your application.
Reply:any idea where i can get a couple of sticks?
Reply:These guys sell hastalloy filler metal.  contact them and see if they're send you some samples or name a local distributor.  Or just ask your LWS; mine will often give away a small sample of anything if they have it in stock...http://www.magellanmetals.com/nickel...FSUeDQodQWEglg Originally Posted by quasiany idea where i can get a couple of sticks?
Reply:Silver braze has been the standard for this type of connection for many years, you should probably stick with it.  Ductility is far more important that strength in this application.
