Here are a few pictures of a excivator stich I recently repaired at work. The stick was broken on all four sides with the exception of a four inch piece. I cut away the stretched areas, welded in backing strips, root-fill-cap and grind smooth. Fabbed scab plates from 1/2" sheet metal and welded as required. I was very pleased with the outcome... Reply:Excellent looking repair, should outlast the machine.I like the runoff welds on the top fishplate, a lot of people can't see the sense in them, IMHO they help a lot....MikeLast edited by mrmikey; 12-08-2009 at 04:15 AM.

Reply:Takes, or at least supposed to, the stress away from an already stressed area at the end of the fishplate. I first noticed them a few years back on Cat loaders I think it was, in stressed areas at the ends of gussetts and similar situations.I've had some people say it serves the same purpose of a run off tab....Mike

Reply:Good repair.Only thing I'd do different, is extend that bottom plate (the one with the round end), six, eight, 10 inches further. Reason being, there is too much rigidity, all ending at approximately the same place.
Reply:1/2 inch "sheet metal" you're in a totally different world then me. excellent job.
Reply:Looks really good! Do you know how it broke (someone swinging in to something i would guess)? Also what rods did you use?
Reply:Dual shield Lincoln 71-M Fluxcore
Reply:Good point, i'll look into that in the future... thanks
Reply:Most commonly they crack and remain un noticed because the operators dont do a daily check, one final rough day and the crack gives way and the metal stretches and tears. I probably cut close to 3/4" of srtetched mtl. away.

Reply:looks good. I just finished a bucket attachment swap to fit a different loader. 1 1/2 plate. I like doing heavier welding like this. just spray.
Reply:"Very Nice" looks like it will be alot stronger than the original. What did you use to cut the 1/2" plate steel? A plasma cutter with a guide or pre made form?Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.& 2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.I don't have the luxury of a plasma....! All my plates are ordered to closest size and I make a cardboard template, trace with soapstone and cut away. Lots of practice seems to help steady the hand. Grind then away you go.
Reply:I use my Hypertherm Power Max 45 plasma cutter and guide or form to make my cuts. Some of the heaviest plate I cut for excavator buckets & dozer blades is 1" thick and sometimes thicker. The cutter does fast work with little dross on the cut piece which means less cleanup with grinder. But you do a great looking job with what you have.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.& 2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:Thanks spectorI really wish my company would grasp the concept. There is soo much technology out there that I feel we are missing out on, I cant say too much though, we (they) purchased (for me) a Climak 5000 Line Boring machine About a year ago. I was able to chose a few "bells and whistles" to go with it. So far it has proven its value and is a very nice machine, so I figure I'll have to stay close with my trusty torch a while longer and thats ok!!
Reply:How did you cut that plate? CNC?

Reply:Awesome work on a very tough project. Going to guess a CAT 312 excavator? Never have I seen one that broke up, must be in some rock excavation or quarry type work.Trbo
Reply:HAHA it actually does look like it could be a cat 312, we had an operator swing our old 312 into a tree by accident a few years ago and it broke in almost the exact same spot. not nearly that bad... that looks like the operator cracked it then pushed material around for 4 hours with out realizing it was broken.
Reply:If there are windy conditions you can try a tapered tip on your gun, I use a Tweco 300A gun with a tweco taper tip with a 3/8 opening, I could give exact part numbers if needed. I turn my gas flow ur to 40-50 and run with it

Reply:This looks SOOOO familiar - i had to do one on one of my machines 2 weeks ago. Broke in almost exact same location and to the same degree. Cause was - had a operator digging thru rock and he thought if he dug with the first two teeth of the bucket he would get threw it easier. Needless to say it didnt work, but it did get him some time off . Soon as i can figure out how to post a picture i'll show it also. Our repairrs are also almost the same - only made the scab on top longer. It works and has held up to 20,000 yds of ripping rock since. I built a ripper / single shank from my D-8 Dozer and put it on the machine to rip thru the rest and finish the job. W/ post pics. Any info on how to post pics would be appreciated.
