Hi, i have been welding for about 10 years. Working for the union, and mom and pops shops. I have only completed my 2g pipe cert, but cant get the director to give me a copy. i am looking for just basic weld certs right now, like plate certs for structural welds. or maybe 1 weld test i can take that covers all the others.........? i dont know where i can go to get these in my area. i am in the west palm area. if you can point me in the right direction that would be great. the local college dosnt hold a cert class anymore. thanks a lot. Joe
Reply:aws has an approved testing facility in hollywood, fl. that is the closest one to you. i think there are only three in the state. gainesville and maybe tampa. call aws miami for phone number.6g will run you about 400. some of the tech schools will test you also, they are cheaper.don't know of any in west palm, but mcfatter in broward county does testing.
Reply:Lincoln has a school in Florida as well that does certs. Not sure where tho.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:I went to tulsa welding school in jacksonville, and their a top notch school, but with a $16,000 price tag. I learned more than Tulsa taught me though from following around grumpy old veteran welders though in the shipyards though. Thats were my learning and knowledge really took off, and it showed in my welding, and my paycheck. I was pulling $2000.00 a week, but I was working 7 days a week, 12 to 14 hour days for 3 years straight. Stick around those veterans, and soak up what they teach you.

Reply:I am not familiar with AWS certs but if you qualified 2G then it seems you should have access to that documentation. In Canada any CWB certifications are the property of the Canadian welding bureau. It states that right on the card issued. Employers regularly tell welders that they can't have the card and they need it for documentation when an inspector comes by. It is a load of crap since they only need a photcopy and the records are owned and kept by the CWB. The whole tactic is to convince the employee that his qualification is not portable. They don't want him finding a better job with another CWB certified shop. If the 2G was done for AWS then my guess is that they have a record of it and it can be confirmed by any new employer with a simple phone call. If employers pull this in Canada I am sure they do in USA. Anyone know the rules about welders qualifications for AWS and ASME ??
Reply:I believe his certs are being held by the union, our hall holds all certs until you become a journeyman. That way you dont take all that free training and leave them high and dry. |
