I was wanting to tack a simple project together today, but as my home situation dictates, I must run an extension from the house to the garage for 220 power, and that was just not gonna happen!! So I figured, since I can still puddle steel with the torch, out it came. While I have not taken any formal classes in oxy-fuel, it is the process I first tried way back in the eighties. I favor cutting with it every chance I get at work. Nobody else uses it though, they always go for the plasma. I actually had some fun sitting down and taking my time, no rush. I get so much better control than using mig. (We only have a mig machine at work.) Lots of heat, so cool down time is much more prevalent. I will be practicing with this much more from now on. Reply:I like oxy/fuel but seldom use it anymore.  Pop taught me how to use it when I was a kid.  It was the only kind of welding I knew untill I bought a mig in college.  Now I have tig and plasma right there in the shop easily available and the torch and tanks are always buried back behind stuff so most of the time I don't bother with it unless I need to heat something up.  I keep saying I'm going to re-arrange the place and get the torch in a more accessible spot so I can use it more but it never seems to happen.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:O/A was all I had for 16 years (no 220v in the house), so we're kinda buddies. I will sadly admit, that since I got the Syncrowave, I don't think I've lit the O/A 6 times in the last 16 years.  Okay, so where'd the last 32 years go. 9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Reply:I think he means UL which stands for Underwriters Laboratories.http://www.ul.com/everything you use that is electrical should have their seal on it. I just saw a news segment on it last night hat there are a lot of fakes out there and you should look for the authentic sel and beware of imitators.Hobart Handler 140Victor O/A
Reply:UF = Underground Feeder cable. This is whats normally used to run to a remote (unattached) location - house - garage. I believe #6UF has ampacity of 55-60, but there are several references you can check.Get the right UF rated wire - bury it per code - and a sub-panel and you'll have a good setup for you detached garge.Miller Dynasty 200DXHypertherm PowerMax 45Victor OAIR CompressorLots of blacksmithing tools and other fun toys meant to creatively disfigure, reshape, manipulate and join metal.

Reply:Smart decision not to run the made up extension.  If it's made of Romex, it ain' t safe, or possibly not safe.  That crap cracks with age when exposed to sunlight.I got mine made out of crap that's made for extension cords, I guess????  Rubber wrapped #6 wire.  Been outside for over about 6 or 7 yrs.Only problem I ever have had is with the recepticle on the business end.  They seem to rust real bad if exposed.  Probably because I'm just using an indoor 220 recepticle.  I finally solved the problem by puting the end under something that shields it from the rain when I'm not using it.  Seems to be holding up.Last one, before I started covering it, sparked and blew the breaker when I plugged the welder in.  Probably lucky, it could have maybe shorted without being plugged in and started a grass fire.Sometimes idiots get a free ride  Learn from it, and do better I guess"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
