Hi guys, just got a Dynasty DX . My old Linde  died after 15 yrs ,so I got the dynasty mostly for thin alum 60 thous. and thicker. I set it up by the directions in the owners manual but the thungsten will not ball up like the old machine, where I would just set it on dc go to a piece of copper to make the ball.   Is there a certain way to prepare 2 percent tungsten to tig aluminum ?   Any info regarding tig welding aluminum  with  the dynasty settings ect. will be apreciated.           Thanks Jim
Reply:With the dynasty, never use pure tungsten (I know, you didn't say that you were) and forget about everything you heard or know about pre-balling the tungsten. In my opinion, with the dynasty balling the tungsten is neither necessary nor even desired.I have a 200dx and absolutely love it especially on aluminum. I even take my machine to work everyday so I don't have to use the shop's synchrowave.I spent pretty much all of today lap welding ~0.060" to 0.125" aluminum (piano hinges onto 1/8" plate). My preferred tungsten is 3/32" 2% ceriated (orange) for both AC and DC welding though I will use 3/32" 2% thoriated (red) if I have to. Which 2% are you using?Whenever I do aluminum I rarely use anything besides 250Hz on the AC frequency and balance between 60% and 75% DCEN. This gives me a nice focused arc.I generally sharpen my tungsten to a point, regardless of AC or DC, with an included angle between 15 and 20 degrees and start welding. Both tungsten will maintain a point for quite a while, almost indefinitely if the electrode is large enough and/or the current is low enough. If the tungsten gets hot enough either through using more balance (50% DCEN) or higher amperages thoriated will tend to split at the tip and for several small, irregular balls while ceriated will simply form one ball on the tip.I have welded nearly all day (pushing the duty cycle) with my dynasty maxed at 200 Amps with a 150Amp air cooled torch and a 3/32" ceriated tungsten. Starting with a sharpened tungsten, the ceriated only formed a small ball at the tip that was about half the tungsten diameter. The sharp tungsten and focused arc made doing fillet welds much easier.Visit Tensaiteki.com
Reply:Thanks for the quik reply, I have written it all down , can,t wait to get to the shop tomorrow,     to try the settings, the tungsten is red end 3/32 , I willtry to get some orange end..             Thanks againJim

Reply:I myself use Lanthanated for DC and either that, or Zirconated tungsten for AC, but the Dynasty isn't too picky, so long as its not pure.Don't worry about balling the tip.  Just grind to a point, and knock the very tip off.As for frequency:That feature on the Dynasty is the greatest thing since sliced bread.DON'T leave it on 60hz.  You've got no idea what you're missing.I never set it below 120hz, but depending on how focused you want your arc, 250hz could be better still.BTW, the percent DCEN balance control is very different than the balance on an older transformer machine. The actual balance on a transformer machine (probably what you're used to), would normally range from 50% to 70%, turning the knob from one end stop to the other. The Dynasty happily lets you get much more DCEN time, and I actually like 80-85% for really clean Aluminum.
Reply:you need ceriated tungsten with the 200dx on alum.

Reply:We have 2 Dynasty's in the lab.  My students have been running them daily for about 2 yrs. The Ceriated tungsten's recommended in the Miller literature didn't hold up very well.  We have had really good luck with 1.5% Lanthanated with both DC and AC.  We run a pointed tungsten when running AL with a strong DCEN bias.  They start out at 60hz and then we crank it up step-by-step to 250hz so they can see the difference.  The Dynasty's have proven superior overall and I really like the way they can do thick to thin AL. (I'm not giving up our workhorse power supplies any time soon though!)We don't hand grind Thoriated in the lab per state safety and I am paying the same for La anyway.  I'd invest in a good grinder, but I'm afraid it wouldn't hold up with student use.
