Called a local place - (5) 6' lengths of 1018 1x1x0.083 came to a couple bucks over $100.  Sound decent?  Not familiar with buying that length - it sounds "meh".  I know I can hit up mcmaster (worst possible place to buy raw materials in quantity) for $21 per 6' length.  So, maybe it's not that great.  What do you guys think?  Looking for some material to build a cart with.Miller Diversion 180Hobart Handler 140 (Soon to be replaced with Miller 211?)Miller Spectrum 625 Extreme
Reply:I'm guessing that material comes to them in 20' lengths, and some of that price is to cut it down for you.  You can save money by bringing a hacksaw, a couple of milk crates and a tape measure with you.  Buy the 20' lengths, cut 'em down according to the dimensions from your own bill of materials right there in the parking lot...

Reply:Not counting cuts, that's over $3.00 a pound which qualifies as grand larceny. Some places near me charge $10 or $20 for 'convenience cuts' which I would never pay for. I'll buy the whole length and cut it with a hacksaw in the parking lot even if I have to buy more than I need. I'll save the left over for the next project.Millermatic 211Lincoln Precision TIG 225Century 250 MIGLincoln 225 AC Box (sold)I support my local welding store (Amazon, McMasterCarr, Cyberweld, EBay).

Reply:I go to a Amish container welding shop here in central Pa. Before finding this place, I tried buying steel from past employers. $100.00 for a sheet of 12 gauge. I bought that and I will not go back. How many Mennonites does your ex like? Reply:Why are you going with cold rolled for a cart? If you get hot rolled stock it will probably be a lot cheaper. 6' lengths tells me they might stock that for machining rather than welding. That will probably add to the price.Besides Fazzio's try Finkels in Lambertville. Shame I was just there this morning picking up some tube, I could have checked the price on flat stock..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:If it matters at all, I recently purchase some HRS 2x2x.125 wall tube for a couple jobs.  Same customer, different orders, different suppliers.  $2 per foot from one supplier, local guys were $2.81 per foot.  Look around for your big steel suppliers, see what their minimums are.  Could save you a buck.-AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup
Reply:You guys seem to be paying retail prices. Last time I picked up steel I spent about $600 (give or take $30 or so) and came home with a 4X8 sheet of 1/4, 80 feet of 2X2 .120 wall square (cut to 10th lengths) 40 feet of 3X3x1/4 angle (again cut in half) 220ft of 2X.120 flat bar ( all cut in half) and a few chunks of reciever hitch stock. Came in at 1060 pounds.(my poor half ton truck was not happy) but that is a normal occurrence for us. That was just enough steel for a small workbench and a bit fir my CNC plasma table. I try and keep steel orders to $600 or more. Reply:There are a couple givens when purchasing metal (steel, SS, alum, etc)Tube (square, round, rectangular..) will always be more than strip or angle.  Has to go thru an additional step in the manufacturing process.Buying cut to order will always be more (if you are looking at per # price) than if you're buying full sticks.None of my suppliers sell partial cuts, nor would I expect them to.  A yard that does this is going to charge more than I'm willing to pay.For job order size quantities I have it delivered. (an additional $25)For really small jobs, or if I'm in the area with my utility trailer, I'll have it cut in half (10-12')Or if I have a "short order" requirement, I'll hook up one of the yard boat trailers and just pick up full sticks.Metal dealers make their money selling by the pound, not by selling 6' pieces. With all that said, I bet I pay less for a full 22' stick of 2"x2"x1/8" angle than most will pay for a 12' cut length.  After all, it's NOT LIKE I'm never going to need a piece of that material in the future. But I do think this thread highlights why there are so many metal yards that don't cater to he hobbiest.  Those that do are going to charge for it.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:I get my steel at Fazzio's here in n.e. Pa.  Prices are reasonable to me.  Not many places close, and the price of gas sucks big time.  I get 10' or 12' lengths.
Reply:There are some decent enough places around.I live between Washington and Baltimore and if I need to travel up North with the utlity trailer I get raped on the toll roads.  Some of the tolls (Harbor tunnel) charge as much for a utility trailer as if I was a 18 wheeler.  Not sure what would happen if I tried to sneak through with EZ-PassBottom line, it would have to be a whole lot of steel to make it worth my while.Con Fuse!Miller Dynasty 350Millermatic 350P-Spoolmatic 30AMiller Multimatic 200Hypertherm PowerMax 1000G3Miller Maxstar 200DX
