Hi gays,Im a newbie here because Ive just started the long way of welding studying. The first thing I bought for welding is a helmet, and I dont have a welder yet. The helmet is an old model of Speedglas. The tag on the helmet says that the model is LM 90230. It includes an old style auto dark unit that has only one ON/OFF button and doesnt have LEDs or indicators at all. So the question is: how I could check if the unit works properly without using a welder? I was told I could turn a 100W incandescent lamp on and then rapidly place the helmets face against the lamp, so the glass should get darker in this case. I did that but with no success. Then I checked the batteries and they were OK. So please suggest what I should do next to check the unit? Many thanks,Alex
Reply:Put it on and look up at the sun... that should tell you real quick.
Reply:My Hobart will flash the shade when you press the button. Failing that you don't need to put it on and look at the sun - just hold it facing the sun looking down at the lens and you'll be able to tell.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
Reply:An electronic strobe light, like on a forklift or wrecker, will cause my speedglas to trigger. Kind of a PIA if you're working around one, 'cause the lens will flick dark with every flash.
Reply:My Miller and Hobart helmets will dim looking at the sun. Hobart is a fixed shade auto dark, miller is adjustable. Both flip. Miller flips even on low sensitivity.Miller Diversion 180Hobart Handler 140 (Soon to be replaced with Miller 211?)Miller Spectrum 625 Extreme

Reply:Believe or not a remote control pointed at the sensor should set it off. My LWS showed me that trick a couple years ago.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:I'm going to have to try that one! I know they (the remote LED) look purple through a digital camera lense!
