Reply:Nice project! And the hitch aint to bad either! Seriously though, was just wondering why you mounted the receiver under the hitch frame, instead of notching the frame out and moving it up.Last edited by Rugar; 07-01-2010 at 08:00 PM.
Reply:Is the main cross bar made of angle turned on edge? The reciever tube looks like other than the single weld on the leg of the "angle", the brackets are all that supports it. If it's a small popup camper it might be fine, but all the Class III hitches I've ever seen use 2"or better heavy square tube for the main cross bar. The reciever tube is then welded to the front, back and sides where the reciever tube meets the cross tube. The welds also look a bit cold from what I see on the ends of the brackets and don't look like they penetrated as much as I would have liked.I'd guess that it would work for a class I (2500lb) or Class II (3500lb) hitch, but they use an 1-1/2" reciever tube. Your's looks like a 2" reciever similar to a Classs III and I doubt that will hold taht kind of weight.Edit: I have also seen Class III hitches with round tube cross members.Last edited by DSW; 07-01-2010 at 08:30 PM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:No problem Ken. It just looked like plain angle from the way that 1st set of picts was taken. I feel much better about it now.Edit: I looked back over the original picts. You couldn't have picked a better angle to "hide" the "tube" if you tried!. Those brackets line up almost exactly where the rear of the tube is in the picts. Reply:BY THE Way, I met this fine woman June 5th, 2010 at 12:00 for coffee, the date lasted 9 and a half hours, we kissed for the first time that afternoon at the end of that peer at St Joe Michigan (silver beach). I intend to ask her to marry me on that day at noon next year, at the end of that peer. I already know the answer:-)HH187Hobart 500i plasma cutterClark 4.5" GrinderDewalt 14" chop saw30 gallom 1.6 hp compressor10 gallon pressure pot sand blasterlots of hand tools

Reply:Near as I can see, there's 12" of weld attaching the tube to the crossmember. That ought to be enough redundancy to work. And again, I hate the leverage inherant in receiver hitches. I still prefer an old fashioned bumper hitch. The additional gussets were a good idea, helps to move the moment (right word?) away from the short welds and spread the force."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
