should i go about wleding cast iron,  cast steel, and cast aluminum any diferent than i would a non cast piece? different filler, technique, anything?Lincoln Square Wave 175 TIGLincoln 110v flux core welder (my 1st)Clarke 180EN MIG
Reply:Welding cast has many considerations. One company named WELDCO sells many filler metals specifically for cast metals.Cast aluminum engine blocks or transmission cases that have a broken mount tab.Aluminum does not need post treatments to avoid cracking.Never weld a turbine blade! or any part of an aircraft that does not have established procedures.Post weld and preweld procedures are required. Some cast products cannot be welded or repaired.Certain items like engine blocks weld very well because they are made well.Often preheating is necessary. After welding the weldment needs to be buried in DRY sand immediately after welding and left overnight or it could crack again. It is dicy,Often of a corner breaks off near a machined surface it will need to be resurfaced after welding because of the shrinkage.Do not weld a cast item that is under thousands of pounds of load like a winch drum.Be very careful about what you weld.Sometimes someone will bring you a item to weld because it had been rejected by everybody else. Be careful. So much to know.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder

Reply:wow...a lot more to it than i thought.i was thinking along the lines of something smaller and less critical. like craked exhaust manifolds and intake manifolds on engines. things like this...Lincoln Square Wave 175 TIGLincoln 110v flux core welder (my 1st)Clarke 180EN MIG
Reply:Sometime you might run into a cracked exhaust manifold or other car part and it looks like cast metal. If you try to weld it it will just keep oozing out an oily substance and resist welding. This is a sintered metal made of powdered metal compressed together to form some exotic shape. There is a special wire for wire feed  to repair this type of metal. Each project is an investigation.I have found that sometimes if you get a part to weld, lets say...an aircraft exhaust part, you can just call up the manufacturer and they are very helpful to help you identify the metal. saves a lot of time.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
