Hi, I have two questions: I work at a bakery in Dallas,Tx. We use aluminium racks and stainless steel  racks. There's a guy that does the repair on those, small welding on the frames or bars. Last weekend he did some and charged over $200 bucks for an hour or so. I respect that it took him an hour to do it, but years of experience. That same day i welded a few racks and compared the welds and mine were a little better. So my plan is to have the boss buy me another welder and in exchange I will do most of the basic welding. I talked to one of the guys that recomended the first welder and he said he was using a stainless steel wire.. I own a Lincoln hd pack and want to get me the lincoln 140 or 180.First do I need  a gas to weld on aluminium or can I use flux cored wire?Second, do I need a special wire for stainless steel(thin)? Thanks in advance.Lincoln Hd pack

Reply:ALuminum and SS are FAR more difficult to weld and weld properly than the mild steel you're doing with your 110v welder. I think you'll find that going from MS to SS and Ali will be like day and night. you'll need a lot more than gas and wire to do this properly. There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:Id say the $200 was a good deal. For aluminum, stainless and mild steel, you're gonna need basically three different gasses (gas or gas mixes) if you want to do it right.  Plus, for aluminum and stainless, you really should use different wire brushes and grinding discs for each type of metal to prevent weld contamination.  Listen to what everybody is telling you, It's not as simple as you'd like it to be, unfortunately.  Again, you might just want to stick the the professional at $200.  Also, a 220v welding unit is highly suggested.  You're gonna spend a lot of money in just set up costs alone to do all three types of metal the RIGHT way.
