Reply:The 6G part is easy.  The 2" part makes it hard.  I'd start practicing TIG on a lot of 2" or smaller if you want to get hired in on an outage and keep the job.
Reply:Exactly, X2.All tests I've taken are tig root, 7018 fill and cap, X-ray or side bends for test.  There's a lot more to welding at a powerhouse than just passing a test.  There are welds in just about any situation imaginable and with mirrors  in even harder situations.  That said, do not give up!  Practice, practice and practice.  That's what everybody else did.  Be like a steer and try!"The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.
Reply:I've done heavy wall 1.5 or 2" pipe tests on carbon steel with 6010 root and 7018 fill and cap.Your going to need to be shown how to properly run a root with 6010 and achieve propper penitration. Thats important. Listen and learn while your being instructed. Land thickness, root gap and amperage are your areas of concentration to achieve a good root with 6010.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:What company or plants in KY?  I work at a power plant in Louisville, KY as an engineer/QC/CWI.  I can tell you right now that passing the tube test is the easy part.  Welding in a hot boiler, in a nasty position on old reheat tubes with a mirror and still passing x-ray is much more difficult.Every tube test I've seen is tig root and hot pass and fill and cap with 7018.  We do not allow 6010 in the boiler, only process piping.  Now 7010, 8010, or 9010 may be used for root in a padweld.Practice, practice, practice... the last thing you want is to take a tube test too early and get a bad name because you busted out.
Reply:sorry to kinda steal the thread but i didnt think this was worth makeing a new post anywho.Does anyone know what the oklahoma steam card cert test consist of......i kinda figure it a tig root and 7018 fill and cap.. ive looked all over the net just cant find the info

Reply:I would find out for sure what the test is and practice. The 6G test where i just retired from was 6" sch 80 with 1/8" 7018 1/8" gap no land. You were allowed only 3 tacks on the pipe. The inspector was there right beside you the whole time. You had to pass a visual with no burn thru or any flaws inside and 100% penetration. Then if it passed x ray you were good to go. But there was a 3 hr written test before you get that far...BobBob WrightSalem, Ohio  Birthplace of the Silver & Deming Drillhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/1999 Miller MM185 w/ Miller 185 Spoolmate spoolgun
Reply:I think API 1104 is the same pre qualified test for pipe. The only difference is that you ( the  welder) must specify your parameters, whether you tig welded the root pass or stick welded. Downhill welding is allowed as long as your proficiantin skill and know what to look for when welding downhill. Aside from that its all about the keyhole when welding uphill. Dont for get to visit pipewelder.com If you have questions about welding pipe. API books are what you need for the requirements and ABSAPI refinery. ABS boiler code. AWS pipe branches.  ASME everything you needed to know but was to proud to ask for fear of ridicule! Good Luck!
Reply:The 6g pipe test isn't hard but like it was said earlier, you need to have practiced it several times to get comfortable with it. Good penetration is very important and watching your keyhole on an uphill weld. Downhill is allowed, however I would recommend practicing ALOT!!!
