Repaired this crack on the ram mount for a huge door that is opened and closed with a hydraulic ram. I added a plate because the metal under the crack wasn't very reassuring. This machine is used to pressure treat wood. Reply:I heated the plate and bent it around using a hammer and tacking it as i went to hold the shape. As for the crack, i ground the whole crack out (a few inches more on either end than the actual crack) and then ran a few passes up the entire thing. The crack had opened up a bit and the first pass was rough which is why i really wanted to add the plate. I had to grind the weld smooth so the plate would follow the contour of the pipe.Cain's Mechanical LLC Southwick, MAwww.cainsmechanical.comRig:-2006 Chevy 2500 utility body-Lincoln Ranger 10-Miller Spectrum -Tons of hand and power toolsAWS D1.2 Structural Steel Certification
Reply:i personally would have fit the plate up closer to the arm than welded it solid to the plate.I think with out more weld in the area around the arm it will crack again but on the inside of the cutout where the arm and the plate meet because now all the force will be delivered to that small area.I would fill in the vally there with a good weld to it was flush then put in one in two over. But thats just my 2c.After the arc has died the weld remains

Reply:that is my call sign, but I have had my license for ten years, I am 21 now. I would have liked to finish the job a little neater and more thorough, but they needed the machine and it should hold up for now.I do a lot of equipment repair like this, all in the field in some pretty terrible conditions and each one is a learning experience. I am glad i got some helpful tips from these pictures, thanks guys.Cain's Mechanical LLC Southwick, MAwww.cainsmechanical.comRig:-2006 Chevy 2500 utility body-Lincoln Ranger 10-Miller Spectrum -Tons of hand and power toolsAWS D1.2 Structural Steel Certification
Reply:Looks like it should hold. I personally would have welded the gaps up and put a weave on the pole too. |
