Its a 1980 model machine and I don't have the serial no. but would like to know if anyone would know what kind of engine miller put in their machines around that year model. Thanks Simon
Reply:If you don't have the serial number, go over to the Miller site, look up the serial number/year of manufacture chart. Then go over to the owners manual list, select the owner's manual that matches up most closely to the serial numbers in your target range.Probably doesn't help much, I have a Trailblazer 4G, manufactured in 1972, has a Continental flathead engine. I think they also made OHV engines????? I'm willing to bet your engine also is a Continental, but not sure what model or type it is.
Reply:I had one it had a 4 cylinder contentail in it . I think it was an 1982 model. Do search for Big 40 in the forsale section there is still some picks of mine there.Miller 330 A/BP Bernard SS coolerMiller cst 250Miller Big Blue 251DCentury 210 Mig (first welder I bought)Hypertherm PowerMax 800Victor torch setRu Fong 31 MilAtlas lathe
Reply:Thanks for the help, I thought thats what it had in it. The big 40 quit welding but the engine still runs and the boss said for me to get rid of it, and the guy thats wants it was thinking of taking the engine out and putting it on a pump.
Reply:I have a Big 20 of that same year, has a Continental Y112 in it. Good, solid motor. I would look at brushes or possibly the exciter, fairly inexpensive repair. These were pretty good machines, hate to see one thrown out for that, but bosses are, well....bosses!Chad "Any day you use a torch or welder is a good day!"Miller Big 20Lincoln Powermig 215Purox Cutting TorchMilwaukee Hand ToolsFord Trucks-Built Ford Tough!Bad Attitude and Lots of Drive
Reply:Thanks BadChad, your right about bosses, but I tried everything I knew, and even called our LWS and tried everything he suggested without spending any money. Brushes were good and weren't stuck, so the boss said he wasn't spending any money on a machine that old, and bought a trailblazer 275, which they will deliver tomorrow.
Reply:That is the way things go sometimes. Hope the Trailblazer works well. There looks to be two alternators on these machines, the one towards the front is the exciter (you can actually replace with an AC Delco alternator, I would have to dig for the part #) which excites the electric field. Of course, there are more components than this, but other than the brushes these tend to be a problem. However, sometimes it pays to call a day a day and go on to something new. There is a lot to be said that if something is not running, it is not making money. BTDT, just posting my 2 cents...I have learned a lot from everyone here, please keep it going..Chad "Any day you use a torch or welder is a good day!"Miller Big 20Lincoln Powermig 215Purox Cutting TorchMilwaukee Hand ToolsFord Trucks-Built Ford Tough!Bad Attitude and Lots of Drive |
