Hello. I'm Steve.I need this welded. I think it's stainless steel, but I'm not sure. Been all over locally, it's either too small a job or I've been told it can't be done. This belongs a close friend of mine.  It has sentimental value. I want to give it to her for her birthday. It was her grandmother's.  I know it wont be the prettiest thing, i just want it use able (cutting bagels & such). If it can be done, i will ship it to you and pay you to weld it/ grind it whatever needs to be done. What do you guys think?  My welding experience is limited to minor arc welding and i am sloppy at best.Thanks.
Reply:you should talk to Zap. If anyone can do it, it would be him. Definately a Tig job. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Thanks. What's Zap's username?
Reply:It's most likely stainless and yes it can be dealt with..I can put it back together but it will have a "line" on both sides where the fuse weld is..I'll do it for nothing if you can get it to me..Should take all of 40 seconds......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:You are the man Zap.PM sent.

Reply:Zap, Make sure to post some pics of the job, and Peto post some pics of the happy recipient. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:It's cool to see the pros helping out with stuff like this. Not just information and an informal education but really doing the work too. I'm looking forward to the photos!I like helping people out - I haven't found too many people locally that need much welded yet

Reply:That's a tough job. Any number of knife smiths around could probably reproduce that piece.City of L.A. Reply:It's a fairly simple and straight forward design. I could reproduce it easily.
Reply:Stukas, Zap,We should get together for a coffee someday, if we haven't already.Zap does Paul C. know your living in his shop??Bob_CPlainville

Reply:Originally Posted by zapsterI got it "Fixed" and that was about it..VERY tough to weld sharp to .030 thick and back to sharp again..Did what I could and sorry no pics..No camera will do that.Sent it back awhile ago and have not heard back..Yet..Nothing to be really proud of but I tried.....zap!
Reply:I would like to see how that knife turned out as well. That would be an easy knife to reproduce but the sentimental value is hard to transfer to the new one.Peto, lets hear how it went over with the owner.
Reply:Glad to see knifemakers chimming in. Even though the sentimental value can not be reproduced, you could always give her the fixed knife for just keeping it and get her a nice reproduction of it. Better steel, better knife scales and a nice sheath is all it will take to make a great knife. If she has any kind of knife-education, get it made in carbon steel one in O1 with natural scales, it will get a nice patina over time. Otherwise better go with stainless and micarta scales.Mikel
