I'm thinking it would be convenient to have a propane fire starter in the offset smoker I'm building. Under the grate. Plenty of room in the firebox and I have a propane grill I could use for parts, burners, etc, but I'm not really sure how to go about it. Any of you folks ever done this? Any advice appreciated.
Reply:does it have to be propane? i prefer natural gas, i have a natural gas firepit (http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=39715)what you're looking to build, i think, is a pipe burner.i think you can do the same with propane, just with smaller holes and a much more simple venturi system. how big of a firebox are we talking? you might be able to get away with just using a round burner from stove (propane camping stove)here's a lot of stuff: http://www.tejassmokers.com/castironburners.htm
Reply:Thanks Moron. I've got a fish cooker with a set up like that shown in the link and thought about just using the burner from it. I also have an old grill with a cast iron burner that should work. There's probably no reason the burner couldn't just be installed in the firebox. I don't know what to do about ashes clogging it though. We don't have natural gas here or even cable TV. Hell, we're lucky to have electricity.
