Hey guys I posted a question in a different subsection of the forum and was thinking this one may get a bit more attention. I have a Radnor 17V series torch thats rated capacity is 150AMPS with a 24 foot lead and a dense plug (It has a #5 nozzle with .040 electrode). My plan was to use this existing set-up with a little harbor freight 80AMP Inverter. I have seen others use this welder with a WP-9 Series welding torch which has a rated capacity of 125AMPS and a 12.5 foot lead with a dense plug and the same nozzle/electrode size. Should I be fine with the additional length of the leads on a torch rated for more AMPS or will this not work propperly? Obviously working with an 80AMP inverter I will never exceed the capacity of a 150AMP torch so thats why I figured I am fine in that aspect. Just wondering if the additional length of the leads will effect the output of the welder? I guess on a side question would a stick set-up with a 24' lead still work with this welder?
Reply:Nothing wrong with the torch.Your power supply should not notice the difference. If it bothers you, you cuold just replace the 25ft. cable with a 12ft. cable and save some money.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Aha! good to hear. I am splurging at work in the next week on a little guy for a tig set-up. Should be tons of fun around the garage this month. I am doing some serious downgrading of the inventory in our garage. I really dont think I'll ever need more then the current 90A Flux core welder and this new unit I plan on purchasing. (Goodbye 250 Bobcat). Thanks Shovelon for the reply.
Reply:Does anyone else think otherwise? Clarification makes me sleep well at night.
Reply:Yes it will work just fine.Your 150 Amp cable will work even better at only 80 Amps. The thing to remember is that TIG is a constant current process. If you dial up 50 Amps, that is exactly what you will get at the job. The higher rated cable will have less voltage drop, so no worries.Cheers, Tony._________________________________Transmig 310 + Argoshield LightOxy acetyleneOxy propanePrehistoric stick welder_________________________________
