What are some ways to get regular steel to rust faster? I've got a piece I've been working on for a while now and have let it sit out in the elements to get a natural aging appearance. Problem is, its barely rusting. A lot of spotting but not the consistent rust I'm looking for. Any home remedies/products that help metal rust faster? Also, I've seen a few peoples work include "blueing" the metal for a patina look. What's used to achieve this? Thanks for any help on this.Northern Tool MIG/Flux coreWEL-BILT 4 1/2 angle grinderYou gotta start somewhere!
Reply:If you're looking for a fast rust coating, try vinegar with some salt mixed in. Rub it on liberally with a rag and let air dry and you should have a good coating by morning.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:I know for copper and brass your get patina fast with a coating of vinegar and salt. Saturate it and keep adding the solution. Leave it to dry. I've never used it for steel but sure it would work to rust the metalLast edited by hotrod123; 06-07-2012 at 09:01 PM.

Reply:muriatic acid will rust steel fast also. The company I worked for had some riding power trowels that got left in a rain-out, totally coating them with concrete. I thought I'd save some time cleaning them by spraying with muriatic acid, came back to pressure wash....low and behold, ALL the steel not painted was rusted bad.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:As long as there's mill scale on the steel it won't rust, you have to make sure all the mill scale is gone. The best way I know is sandblasting then spray it with water, the steel will turn bright orange in a few hours, I just did it with 2 I-beams, looks real nice and consistent. As far as the bluing goes, that just turns the metal dark, I've used it a lot, you have to wipe it on, then neutralize it with water or acetone, BUT, if you don't neutralize it, it'll rust like crazy and fast too, so there's 2 options for you. http://www.philswelding.com
Reply:muriatic acid is the quickest way.It will remove all mill scale from hot rolled steel in about 20 minutes. Once you remove it from the meriatic acid, rinse it down with water and then let it sit.....wet. It will not rust tomorrow, it will rust right now.make sure and be safe when working with muriatic acid.Good luck!Miller TrailBlazer 301Miller 12rc feederMiller ShopmasterMiller 22a feederPlasmaCam CNC TableHypertherm 45 cutterDrills, saws, blast cabinets etc.
Reply:Pee on it, then bury it in wet dirt and pee on it every day. I will guarantee it will rust. Mac

Reply:The acid will do it. If you have clean steel and don't want to mess with acid, try vinegar, salt and some hydrogen peroxide.Several different recipes here: http://magichammer.freeservers.com/creating__rust.htmLast edited by Oldendum; 06-08-2012 at 08:06 AM.
Reply:On the cheap I've used the works toilet bowl cleaner, contains 20% hydrogen chloride (also known as muriatic or hydrochloric acid) to strip the zinc coating off bolts. If left unnatended they rust FAST.....For a patina, saw on American guns where they set the metal in old wet coffee grounds for a period of time to achieve that look.Last edited by Spar-X; 06-08-2012 at 12:03 PM. Reply:+1 on the muriatic acid. Your can get at most build material suppliers, it's used to clean mortar off brick, block, and stone. You can get it at homo depot and lowes alsoMiller bobcat 225g - spoolmatic 1Mm250 - 30a spoolMiller spectrum 375Thermal arc 95 Everlast Ex 250As the boiler turns, these are the days of our lives

Reply:that's really interesting that muratic acid causes instant rust. because,i use it to remove rust stains from my gray epoxy painted shop floor. does wonders. the one big problem with painted floors is that condensation just sets on top where a non-coated floor will absorb it.miller thunderbolt 250vlincoln square wave tig 175 prolincoln idealarc mig sp250everlast tig 210EXTeverlast power plasma 50chicago electric (hf) 130 tig/90 arcchicago electric 90 amp flux wire3 sets oxy/acet

Reply:JW3, the way REAL men do it is to put the rag on first, then dose it. Toughest man does the overhead.
