Reply:After all the Written examinations... The practical welds are administered and overseen by an Examiner from the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training - He is VERY Strict and doesn't take ANY Sh!t from anyone.  It is HIS way or the HIGHWAY.All welds open groove (no backing plate)There must be a Stop/Start on ALL Root Passes in All Positions and it is to be in a predetermined place - Usually in first 1/3 of the Coupon.2G  - 6010 Root, 7018 Hot Pass, Fill and Cap.  Can be done in 5 or 6 passes.  No more.  No less.  Must have 3 Pass Stringer cap showing 1/2 of bottom and middle passes, and all of last pass - Anything other than this and you FAIL visual.  Coupons have to be preset to compensate for weld pull - Finished weld has to be 180° or you FAIL on visual. 3G - GTAW (Tig) Root.  7018 Fill and Cap.45° Inclined plane (overhead) 6010 Root.   7018 Fill and Cap.4G - 6010 Root.  7018 Fill and Cap.Oxy-Acetylene  - One 30° bevel on a coupon and a torch cut hole to a structural shape with a weldable fit.No power tools allowed.  Coupons are prepared by you on a bench grinder.  Coupons may be touched up on the edges with a hand file BEFORE welding.  Tacks may be feathered with a file or an old hand saw only.  NO clean up after welding  other than a wire brush. No altering of coupons from specified position for the weld being done - Examiner pokes his head in while you are welding - Any funny business and you get a tap on the shoulder and are asked to leave. No switching hands once welding has commenced - You are allowed to choose either hand for any coupon but you must complete the test weld with whichever hand you started with - If the Examiner suspects any funny business when he looks at your coupons, you are tossed out. You are allowed 3 hours total from start to finish.  All coupons must be marked and on the table before time runs out or you automatically FAIL.You are not allowed to "re-do" any welds or the Oxy-Acetylene cutting - You get one set of coupons per weld position - That's it.Once you leave the welding lab, and the coupons cool.  The provincial examiner goes over the coupons and does a visual inspection using a strict rejection criteria.   All welds have to show sufficient penetration on Root Pass or you FAIL visual and you are DONE.All cap passes are to have sufficient weld reinforcement - Weld deposit is to be less than the thickness of a dime or you FAIL visual and you are DONE.Should you  pass visual inspection, the examiner cuts the coupons and does Face and Root bends on all coupons.Any tears on inconsistencies that are larger than the head of a 1/8" 7018 electrode and you FAIL and you are DONE.Any 2 tears or inconsistencies (that are SMALLER than the 1/8") but are closer that a specified distance and you FAIL and you are DONE.I cannot remember if we had to run a 1G (6010/7018) as well but you get the idea...Last edited by Black Wolf; 06-16-2012 at 12:14 AM.Later,Jason
