I'm building a new suite and I need some ideas, specifically for a pots/pans hanger and overhead hood, something similar to the one below but with a hood in the center. I really want to use mild steel and grind a pattern into it, I have seen done on this site before but Im not sure where. Any advice for a clear coating that will protect steel? The cooktop will be in a island in a small kitchen, basment suite, Im also looking for some unique ideas for cabients, or really anything that will help make a small kitchen workable and comfortable Attached Images
Reply:Well I've seen some pretty cool pots and pans holders, but its a bit difficult to see from this photo, what it is you're looking at...  If you're talking about a 'stove hood' with fan, then you're really looking at something much more 'involved' when adding on a 'pots, pans an utensil' holder.Metal:In any event, one piece of long flatbar should do the trick quite nicely (2" wide x1/4" thick x 16' long.  Depending on the size you could easily bend it at 2', 7', 9', 14' for a nice rectangle with no welds aside from the one needed to join the two ends.I'd then think about square tube around 1.25" x 1/8" and closing the ends with a piece of the extra square bar.  Keystock from 1/2" on up to 3/4" for the supports to the ceiling.  You could likely even use more flatbar, but Tube or Keystock will break it up a bit more...  'Heat-Twisted' keystock is one of my favourites and can be made to look 'incredible' with a grinder and a torch and almost become 'organic' in nature. At the ceiling, I would put in decorative anchors and use a 'small length' of 'chain' or 'cable' between the square and the anchor (or merely run straight through the 'square tube', should you be using that...).  If you're not worried about lateral movement, then mounting directly to the ceiling would work and likely moreso if you have a 'hood' in there someplace...  Also, you could fashion some pretty nice looking mounts or add to existing covers, etc...For finishing, a Grinder with 'Flap Disc' (around 60 grit) will give you that nice 'deep and 'swirled' patterned' look, although a good  high-speed air sander with various paper grits is my personal favourite.Don't forget too that Mild Steel will take on an incredible 'Heat patina' after any surface treatment and that always an option if you think it might fit the decor. For sealing, there are many, many options...-Wax, Polymer sealants, -Oil based sealants, etc....  I've used a 'Poly Based' sealant on a mirror that I did for my bathroom and it's still without any visible rust.Cheers,/J...Miller Diversion 165120 amp Buzz BoxVictor Oxy/Ace Oxy/LPGSmith "Little" Oxy/LPGHypertherm Powermax 30Lot's of Misc. tools n' crap....
Reply:I dont know if this will help, but my Dad used an old wagon, tractor wheel, scrap yard salvage, for a pan hanger. Something like that a person could cut the hub out of a big rim 4' plus, and  put a stove hood in the middle of that.Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
Reply:Seems like the vent would have to be below the level of the pans for best results.  If the pans hung below the bottom of the vent, I would think they would get in the way and end up with grease and grime on them from cooking.
Reply:Hello,    I just did a makeover in our kitchen new electric new floor new cabinets well you get the point. The top cabinets are 42" tall great for small kitchen and roll out base cabinets work real nice for pot and pans. Here are some pictures to look at.                                        Vernon Attached Images
Reply:Here's another idea for turning cupboards into rolling shelves for pots & pans. This is a montage photo of my one of my kitchen cupboards.According to wifee, the wire drawers don't hold any more pots & pans than the fixed shelves we had before BUT... it allows easy access without having to move items, unstack pots, etc.  Therefore... she likes it!!!I got these weld made, heavy duty, powder coated units at Lee Valley Toos.Just another option to keep in mind.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:You're gonna have to consider the ceiling height in the basement ...as you can barley fit any small appliances on the counter with tall upper cabinets.... and the 26"-30" requirement on the vent hood is pretty tight to be using any of that space up for pans..... so maybe a solid sheet skirt with them on the sides or something.... as the fan will melt if too close and the pans will really get in the way...I have put alot of down draft units  in the basement as it gives you overhead room then ,but is costly and nearly impossible in a island on cement...the upper cabinets are probably gonna have to be 24"-30" tall max to have any usable counter space...good luck with your designLincoln 225 Tombstone,Miller Big 20,Hobart 180,150' Argon,A/D hobart hood 22 Ton Log splitter,79 F350 dump eats 4.75 TONS and still turns cutters, grinders,And a  Hypertherm POWERMAX 30
