I want to buy a victor cutting torch setup but not sure if I should go with propylene since I've never used it ... But I heard its the new way to go ... What's ur say-so ? On propylene vs acetylene
Reply:Propylene is not as common as Propane as an alternate fuel for oxy-fuel cutting.   Propylene is made from Propane.  I use Propane for all my cutting and heating, due to the cost difference between it and Acetylene.  Plus the ease of refilling (Sunday afternoon refill?  Not a problem for your local gas station).  Once you get used to cutting with it, it cuts as well as Acetylene.   Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk 2Jay DavisAWS-CWIC-60 Specialty Welding ContractorLoving husband, and father of two boys (
Reply:I have used propane for years on a Harris torches.  Works great for cutting and rose bud work.  I used propylne once at a LWS trade show.  They said it is a big cost savings over acetylene and would pre heat quicker than propane.  It cut great but for my needs propane is fine.  Neither work very well for fusion (ox/acet) welding but I use the tig for that.Dan
Reply:In my opinion, if you're going to use it to weld, you need acetylene.  If you don't mind spending more money for fuel gas and don't mind having limited availability of it, use acetylene.  It's a great fuel gas for cutting.Don't let people blow smoke about one being 'safer' than the other and scare you away.  They're both dangerous if handled by an ignorant person.  Educate yourself, and safety won't be a reason to choose one over the other.  All that said, I use propane.  I can fill it most anywhere and it's great for heating.  As a cutting fuel, it does fine.  I find that it's easier to produce virtually slag-free cuts with propane than acetylene.  Preheat does take longer with propane unless you're using a grossly oversized tip.I don't have much to say about propylene.  I've never used it and have no desire to.  If money isn't an issue and you're mainly wanting to cut (vs heat), skip propylene and go for acetylene.  If money is an issue, or you're needing a lot of cheap heat, use propane.
Reply:I'm goin to use it only to cut metal ...bevel and cut pipe etc ... Pipeline stuff I heard of another welder converting to it ...but I didn't have time to ask him questions ...
Reply:You don't have to choose between gases. I run LP and acetylene. Only the cutting tips are different for all practical purposes, so grab a tip for the gas of your choice and have at it.I use propylene tips for LP since I got a bunch cheap off Ebay. No difference I can see between "LP" and propylene tip performance. I haven't used propylene yet since I haven't gotten any free/cheap propylene cylinders to exchange...
