I recently bought a 17v tig torch to start learning roots on my own time but i need to buy consumables, collets, collet body's, lens, electrodes, etc... i already have a flow meter and argon.. is it around 30 that i have the gas flowing at?what i want to do is learn how to put in the roots on pipe, 4", 6" etc, sch 40, 80 but im going to practice on plates first of course.my question is... what size elecrodes (red thoriated) should i get that will work for my purpose, 0.040, 1/8, 3/32, 1/16?also when i look for collets on ebay, some are describe as...  torch welding collet body 17 18 26.... would the "17" in this description mean that its compatible with my 17v torch?and im assuming, once i find out the size of electrode i need, then ill know what collet size ill need, collet body etc anyway, just trying to educate myself a little and thank you in advance for any informationty

Reply:Originally Posted by crab fishermanGas lens parts are different, and likely unnecessary for your application as they don't work as well when walking the cup.Certainly some will disagree with what I said! That's O.K.!-Ian
Reply:Also 30 cfh sounds a lil high unless your shielding gas is being blown away.
Reply:I use 1/16 and 3/32 thoriated tungsten and collets. Very rare do I use 1/8. 15-20 CFH argon flow.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:sounds like you have a few good answers here already, but youtube has a couple guys that are very good at explaining things.  one is   welding tips and tricks dot com. Guy does some of the best stuff I've seen, and doesn't brag about it. Also some pretty good stuff from Lincoln Electric.  Pipe roots, usually you'll need a very small gas cup, #3 or 4, and 3/32" tungsten, as the bead is going to be be narrow, and usually no filler. Maybe a gas cup later, but not usually required unless there's a breeze, or you need a lot of stickout on the electrode.Dougspair
Reply:Also make sure you get a set up for an air cooled machine.  The parts are different sizes except the tungsten.  Just an FYI.Lincoln 175Monkey Wards 230v.  Stick
