Reply:Was, I think, a good deal.  Picked up the whole shootin' match for less that half what you could buy the machine for new.  That's not counting the gun.On the other hand, it was not a pleasant purchase.A good deal of the equipment I own comes from auctions.  They generally fall into 3 categories.  Going out of business, estate sales, and anonymous equipment yard auctions. The worst is the seller that's lost his business.  Second, and not always a bad thing, is the estate/retirement auction.  Sometimes the guys are quitting farming, and moving to town.  They enjoy seeing someone buying the stuff that's gonna use it.  The estate sale is something different. This was a going out of business deal, and I don't particuarly feel too good about it.  I'm happy to have the equipment, but I'll always think about the guy that had to sell it.  It could be me too one of these days.I can use almost everything I own, and think about where it came from.  Sometimes the thoughts aren't too pleasant.   Everything on this place has a history. But at the same time, I didn't take advantage of someone.  I paid the price asked, and walked away.  That same person could be bidding on, or buying, something of mine one day.  Whether it's an estate sale, or if I go under. For me, it's been a sensable way to get into high amp wire welding for a price that I can afford.Being as I already own the engine drive, I was able to get into 250amp-plus capacity for 8 c notes. I can go 250amps 100%, 350amps 60%.I downloaded the manual, and from what I can understand, this machine will go into the 400amp+ range without the contact clip.  Not sure what it means, but I will dagonne sure figure it out.  It's quite a new thing for me, and I think it's probably all I'll ever need.Already having the engine drive capability, this is a really cheap way to get into high powered wire feed welding.  I work outside anyways, so the Ranger isn't a problem.  I don't feel constrained to a unit that I have to plug into a wall outlet. It'll probably always be digestin' flux core.  I can't use shielding gas in my situation. It's new.  Or as good as new.  And I couldn't have justified the money at full price.  Overall, I'm pretty F'n thrilled about it.  And thanks for y'all that have posted encourageing comments.BTW...... The garden hose is 200' of shielding gas line, the rods...100lbs of 5/32 7018.  I guess you could call it a good day, but it was at someone's expense. Here's the "Lincoln Guts". it up tomorrow Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Congrats samm!Ya know! You may have been doing the guy a favor taking that off his hands, you never know why or what has transpired to make someone go out of business, he might be selling everything and planning on moving to Buena saris with a new mistress or something!     So, look on the bright side, he was selling, you where buying, no one got hurt between the two of you!Just like that guy with the machine shop where I bought all that stuff recently that was going out of business that I told you about. He told me before I left and we where shooting the breeze, he was glad to be done with it, he got over his head and couldn't sleep at night worrying whether he was going to make it or not, and he was glad that his stuff was going to someone that could put it to good use.He can now sleep, I got me some new to me goodies,at the end, everyone was happy!#1. Reply:I guess the deposition rates just weren't good enough for Clarence. He's crackin' the whip!
Reply:Good buy Samm.  Hope the machine serves you well.I too, find stuff like that.  Bought a bunch of taps and dies from a widow one.  Complete sets in wooden boxes.  Her son had set a sell price.  I didn't argue.  Paid the money and took my 'find" home.  I guesstamate I got close to $1500 worth of the stuff for $100.  All American made.
Reply:Nice find Samm,That LN-25 will take everything you can throw at it.  I've been eyeballing them myself, but I need a to quote a job that's big enough to justify the purchase first.About your 200' of garden hose, for shielding gas....a word of warning...Normal shielding gas hoses will sometimes outgass and contaminate the gas that's going to protect your weld.  Some call it 'Monday morning syndrome'.  The shop I work days in has experienced this...you'll get some bad welds after the equipment sits for a couple days idle.  The problem traced back to shielding gas that sits in the line for a couple days.  Purging the line before starting to weld solves the problem. There's an article in Welder's Journal or some other trade magazine about this problem.  If I can find the article, I'll post the magazine name and issue date.  The article talks about the fact that shielding gas lines are made with several different rubber/plastic compounds.  Some are better than others for avoiding gas contamination. The reason I brought this up is I think common 'garden' hose might give you similar, or even worse problems.  I'm not sure it won't work for shielding gas, but I'd make certain that it's well purged with fresh gas before you start to weld.  Purging 200' of line is going to use a lot of gas...Too bad you can't get your gas tank closer to the work site...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:A-Dab-will-do........  I doubt if I'll ever use shielding gas being as I work outside all the time.  I guess I'll keep the line around for something that might pop up down the road.  It is 02 line I think.  Has a high pressure rating on it, but I don't remember what it was stenciled withI couldn't get anything together on Saturday. The machine has .045/.052 drive rollers, and the LWS didn't have any .045 flux core wire.So I figured what the heck, how about some .035 rollers and a roll of Innersheild.  THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE RIGHT SIZE ROLLERS IN STOCKI could have picked this all up when I was in Tulsa, but I like to trade local. So now, maybe the wire and rollers will be here mid weekRight at $90 for a roll of .045About the same for the .035 and rollers.  So it's a wash.  Anyhow, I have both on the way.The .045 might be larger than I need, but I've been told it'll carry more amps with better penetration.  I guess I'll find out.  I'm really not an experienced wire guy.  Basically all I've ever used wire for is sheet with my little 110v unit.  This ought to be able to handle much heavier plate"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Yup it's Oxygen line.  Don't know if it's suitable for shielding gas, but the guy used it for that.  Don't know what I'm gonna do with 200 feet of it Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:The pic you just posted above, looks like what is sold around here as an inert gas hose.  Generally, anything approved as oxygen is good for inert gases, also. Reply:Samm-  No worries, I'm smiling with you on the joy of your new toy.  You're right, that .045 wire will carry the current and penetrate good on the thicker stuff.   I feel for ya on the local weld shop experience.  Seems that's the way it is here fairly regularly.  With the bad economy, the shops aren't keeping anything in stock that doesn't sell in big numbers, so the result is only getting half of what you need in one trip and alot of waiting for orders to come in later.  I have a new roll of 10-lb 8-inch .045 T-11 fluxcore wire comming in at the local shop that I ordered the same day I got the Suitcase feeder.  Don't have much use for it anymore without the feeder since my Passport doesn't really have the balls to burn .045 on thick stuff and I don't use fluxcore in the shop machines.Last edited by DesertRider33; 04-12-2009 at 11:35 AM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
