well deer season is fast approaching and with the economy being so bad, im now close to broke after paying for a hunting lease. i am looking to yall for advice on material to use to build a deerstand. i am in the construction industry so i have a lot that is available for free. i am wanting to build a light weight stand. can emt conduit be used? i have tons of it and not a lot of usage for it. i also can get schedule 40 pipe, but then it gets heavy. what would be best for a tripod type stand that can support no more than 300 lbs. any help is greatly appreciated. i have a hobart ac/dc stick and a 180 lincoln mig. which one would be best for the materials? thanks again.
Reply:The conduit might be a little too light.  I just helped a buddy hang some tree stands.  Those were made from 1x1 square tubing.  I'm not sure of the thickness, but definitely not thicker than 14ga.  These are the kind where it's just a little chair that straps to a tree, and a ladder that you strap top, middle, and bottom to the tree.  If you're doing a freestanding tripod style, you'll probably want heavier material.  2x2x1/8" square tubing maybe?  Some good bracing will probably be needed on the 2x2x1/8" tube.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:I've built these tri pod stands for a lot of years now. My friend Andy weighs over 300# and he hunts on them a lot. The climbing leg does bow some but not bad.The legs are 1 1/4 EMT, the top part the legs slide in are 1 1/2 EMT. The platform is 1/2 rebar and the seat is 3/8 rebar. It is worth building the seat as the deer can see right through it when you aren't in it. The swivel is a 3/4 all thread rod on the stand and a 3/4 coupler on the chair. I make leg sets for the chairs to be used in ground blinds. Attached Images
Reply:I almost forgot, the steps are 1/2 cold rolled. Don't use anything but cold rolled as anything else will bend. Don't ask how I know this, jus believe what I say.

Reply:thanks yall. a lease is just simply where you pay "x" amount of money to have the hunting rights to someones land. i still have some money. but the economy has me going for broke. im trying to spend as little as possible and use what resources i have available. thanks again.
Reply:Take a browse thru Cabela's, Gander Mountain or Bass Pro if there's one near you ( like we really NEED an excuse to go there ) , or even look thru the online stuff. Most tree stands are fairly simple to do if you stick to the basic ones. My buddy's got 2 sitting in his garage from his Grandfather that I could bang out of 1" square tube in a couple of hours if I wanted. These were all the fixed type, not the climbers, but I've seen those done also..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:So what do you use that thing for? I gather you sit on it. Do you just wait for deer to wander past? How long do you sit up there for? I'm a bit unfamiliar with 'deer stands', but I'm curious.Yeah, I carry.House keys, wallet, some change, usually a newspaper, maybe a pen.

Reply:Have you thought about hunting from a blind?  I have killed more deer from a blind than than from a stand.  I have buddy that got one of those huge card board appliance boxes, and spray painted it in camo one year.  He cut windows out and shot plenty of deer from it.  He said with it painted, it lasted all season, plus it was easy to move, and easy to attach brush to it for more camo.  He was just out the cost of cheap spray paint.  Just a thought.http://www.youtube.com/user/c599209/videos
