Im new to Air Arc, and I have a few questions. We have a project to cut thru some 8 inch pins. I have been attempting to do it with the Air Arc, and made progress, but the rod gets so hot it is yellow and melting the holder. Set up right now. A 4000 HD, air pressure is set to 80 lbs, 3/8 Rod with the machine set to 500. The end tip of the rod appears to be carbon and I have been grabbing the rod at this location with the holder. Should I be grabbing the rod further down? Thanks in advance.
Reply:I use copper-clad rods, grab them near the middle - burn half then slide.  Make sure your air ports are clear and in line with your rod. When any government, or any church for that matter, undertakes to say to its subjects, "This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know," the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives.
Reply:Why you not using a cutting torch?  Air arc is really only meant for weldment removal.
Reply:make sure your torch heads (air flow) are beneath the electrode.  everything else looks ok.  arcair has a lot of info on their site.
Reply:Traveling left to right airstream has to be to the left of the carbon, rod preheats, air blasts away the molten metal, right to left just the opposite.
Reply:You might want to look at an exothermic torch and rods, like the Slice system. works great for cutting pins like that.
Reply:if your rods are burning up really fast, try lowering your amperage. The K4000 should not melt."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:You did not say if you were cutting "across" the pin or cutting "with" the pin.I have removed large pins by cutting away the center of the pin to where I had a large hole yet not near the pin surface. At that point I "quenched" the pin with water and it shrank enough to tap it out with a hammer.Consult with these guys. They are the best in the industry.http://www.broco-rankin.com/broco/industrial.cfmLincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
