The company I work for won't buy any nickel rod. So I have to choose between 7018,6011 or 6010. I am welding coil rods  on drain scuppers on a bridge so they can be adjusted to grade before we pour.
Reply:Mild steel electrodes will give you really bad results. Expect to hear "ping" sounds coming from your welds all day long.Would bailing wire work? You're talking about temporary supports. right? Are 309 SS electrodes an option?  309 SS would be my second choice, but it won't give you results as good as 99% Ni or 55% Ni.If mild steel is your only option, you want to use 6010/6011, (6011 is basically the same as 6010 but it's designed for AC power supplies.)http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=10772Last edited by Joshfromsaltlake; 07-08-2012 at 05:25 AM.
Reply:7018 would work just fine for what your doing. DON'T use 6010, you will have terrible results. I've had to use 7018 in a pinch and it works well. Throw a fire blanket or k wool over the piece when your done welding so it will cool slowly and other than that it should weld fine
Reply:I used 7018 on Fri and it was hot out 100 degrees so it cooled slow I peened after and everthing held OK. Nothing cracked.
Reply:For something at ~3000 degrees F it really doesn't matter of it's 0, 50 or 100 degrees around it - it will cool down at about the same pace anyway. A bit of wind and 100 degrees will cool it faster than 0 degrees and no wind. "Hot" is very depending on what you compare it too...

Reply:4 years ago I was trying to weld this 7" practicing for my B pressure at home.Welding this Pipe together.. I bought it from the scrap yard deliberately to practice putting in welding roots.. Didn't realize that it had a great deal of carbon in it.. I would put a 6010 rootPass in and once complete I'd hear *ping* *ping* *crack* and it would crackMy whole entire rootpass all the way around. Hit it with a hammer, and the weld would separate.46’ sae30047’ sa200 w/Wisconsin VF451’ shorthood56’ shorthood56’ shorthood68’ redface69 redface07’ ranger 305G13’ sae300Inconel/Hastelloy – SS – Duplex – Chrome/Carbon Tig – F3Downhand – STT/RMD – F3F4 – B Pressure
Reply:i dont weld cast, never have. my lws told me there is an outfit that welds cast and they buy boxes of 7018 AC and use straight polarity. i asked him again about it and he told me straight up thats what they use. worth a shot
Reply:I just welded a bunch of cast parts to mild stel tubing using MIG er70s-6 and it worked fine. I just goes to show you you can't just say "heres how it is". Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
